Real Big TV vs Projector
I'm in the process of finishing my walkout basement. At first, I was thinking of putting a projector and 96" screen in. But I saw this 80" Sharp LCD for like $4K and I'm having second though. Because the reason to have a walk out basement is to have more light so I'm not sure putting in a projector makes sense. Maybe I should just wait for the 80" LCD to drop in price and forget about the projector and screen system?
What do you guys think?
In my mind, when the basement is done, it'll kind of look like this"

Just my opinion, but having been in a buddies house who has some ungodly huge screen for his projector, he had to hang up blankets over his windows because any light that leaks in completely ruins the experience.
That and the fact that he finished his basement really nicely but has BLANKETS hanging from the windows.
With the new giant Sharp LCD's coming out, I don't really see the point of a projector anymore... but I haven't really researched the latest TV's or newest projectors.

That pic is kind of funny, there's a door so I assume it's a walkout, but it's got tiny windows!
Having an LCD would definitely be easier to deal with, you wouldn't have to put in blackout blinds and such to control the light. All things being equal I'd probably choose the massive LCD, but usually they're super expensive. If they come down to double the projector price and the size is close, then I'd lean to the LCD.

Well he can buy light-blocking window coverings.
Though in the cost/benefit I guess one would have to account for any added cost of light blocking blinds. For me the cost wasn't any different, it was just a check box on the blinds I ordered.

I chose projector and love it. However, I have no windows in my theater room, so it's easy. A high lumen projector will deal with some ambient lighting, but you will still have to deal with setting things up which is more difficult than a TV. The picture on projectors is pretty comparable, so the differentiating points would be size (projector), ambient light (LCD), setup (LCD), and price (projector)

Agreed, but how much is a good blackout covering? Just from a quick search on blindsgalore.ca it seems to be around $100-$150 per window.... but I have no idea on the quality.
He did have at least 4 or 5 windows in his basement plus a screen door.
I guess in the end it depends on the setup of the basement and whether it's strictly a theater room or more of a multifunctional room before you can really make a decision.

In my mind, I can go all in and do a media room like this:
http://photos.myrealpage.com/wps/res...227131-16.jpeg
But I don't have the money for this after finishing the basement.
Or I can wait for this 80" Sharp to fall in price:

Without the media room construction cost, the 80" is actually much cheaper.
I'm leaning towards the large LCD. This will probably be my last house before I move to a retirement home down the road. So if I do buy the large LCD, I would never have a truly large screen ever which kind of hurts my manhood.

We have blackout blinds in our walkout and it is amazing. Basically, our entire north wall consists of large windows and a windowed door. All have blackout blinds, and we can watch a movie easy anytime of the day.
One caveat: our windows are northwest facing, not south facing, but it's quite bright when the blinds are up during the day.
Another point to consider: while you'll always get more size for less money with a projector, you should also factor in noise - where your projector is and how loud it is during operation are important to know. Also, if you have kids/pets, an out-of-the-way projector and a screen are harder to damage than a giant LCD screen.

Times the length of your penis by 16.5 and that us the size of screen you must have to keep your manhood

I'd also look at the quality of the Sharp LCD picture versus the projector.

I find multiplying by 10 to be pretty easy.
We're talking centimetres, right?

After having a projector, I find all TVs so small now. Going for my old 104" projector to even a 80" TV would leave me wanting more.
If you don't have that many windows to be able to block out most of the light, go for the projector and never look back. The OH SNAP factor when you watch sports, movies, and play video games on a massive screen never faded for me, and in fact made me want to watch movies, because it so closely matches an actual theater experience, well in fact it was much much better because its your home and you can fart anytime.

I think you should ask your teddy bears what they want.

Go with the TV. We had a projector in our basement for 3 years, absolutely hated it. You could only watch it at night or unless you put something in front of the window. If you are going to have a projector, put it in a room with no windows or outside light.

Yeah that seems about right, mine were a bit more as two of my windows were 96" wide or something crazy like that.
But still I was going to get window coverings anyway, my walkout basement gets quite cool in the winter, the added insulation from the cellular blinds was something I was after even if I didn't want/need blackout.

light control is important, but most of the projectors today are quite bright, and have high lumens, at least you can get ones with very high lumens that make normal light rooms an option.

Why not go with a TV mounted on the wall and a projector screen that comes down from the ceiling in front. Best of both worlds. Just put it on the credit card
I have seen the same setup that Old Yeller saw and I was impressed with the size but not with the picture quality...even with the room dark.
How far are you sitting from the screen? I was looking at the 80" but went with a 65" and I am more than happy from 12' away.
Here is a pic of it hung on the wall (so everyone can see how big my penis is): https://www.dropbox.com/s/ipbyypm2u2...2013.48.36.jpg
Don't forget that the projector bulbs are very expensive to replace. Also looks like your basement ceiling is finished. How do you play to run the cables for the projectors?
