Default Work From Home Ideas

Looking for some ideas and brainstorming.

My wife and I are expecting our first child at the end of October, and while I'm obviously excited at what lies ahead, the typical financial concerns are becoming stronger. I have a great job that affords me a low level of stress, and the fact I work 35 hours a week leads to a pretty great work - life balance right now, which I'm not anxious to give up with a baby on the way. That being said, it's going to be tough to make ends meet, so I'm trying to come up with realistic ideas to make an extra few hundred bucks a month from home - something that would require 5 hours a week or so only takes me up to a normal work week anyway while allowing me to work it into my schedule and won't take me out of the house.

So fire away - I'm curious to know what others have done, or are doing, or what ideas you might have.

I assume since you didn't list any that you have no skills to speak of, so I recommend selling jewelry on ebay or telemarketing.

Go to Accenture or Metafore and talk about small contracts in a variety of fields that can be done on a computer / remotely. You'll have to incorporate yourself though (as far as I know).

Purposely left those out as I didn't want to steer the suggestions in a particular direction. I'm curious to see what options or ideas might come up that would lead me in a different direction than I might otherwise pursue.

my old neighbours were retired by 40 (seriously) and wanted extra 'play money' so they got involved in the local farmers market

they sell chocolate sauces and the husband makes picture frames out of old barn wood.... they make a enough $$ to go on a couple extended vacations a couple times a year

I worked in technical sales, I have experience enough so that now I work as a contractor. I now do more system design work, I do this work from home.

Make something cool and sell it. I have a buddy who makes toy ray guns out of old hairdryers and then sells them on a website.

This would be my dream work from home job. Unfortunately I also have no creative skill so that sucks.

Well, I have absolutely no valuable input whatsoever so I shall leave you with this insightful, though slightly NSFW infopic from the ever-informative Oatmeal.

Remember, slightly NSFW due to language, but if you want to start working from home this could be your ticket!

I GUARANTEE you have creative skill buried somewhere inside!

I mean, the guy who makes ray guns takes old appliances, spraypaints them, glues on a couple of pieces and blamo - instant (cool) toy.

I also saw a lady at a recent Texas fair who would take skeletons of small rodents and pose them in human themed dioramas. Riding little bikes, playing cards etc. Again, she needed some rodents (easy enough to come by), some glue, and some ability to squelch any squeamishness.

As for me, I record children's stories with my wife. I have access to a small recording studio, and my wife is an actress, so we write short kids stories, and then record them and give them to friends.

Hell, what about that guy who took a question on Reddit about a Roman Army vs a battalion of Marines and is now being offered a job to write a screenplay? Romans vs Marines

Try creating something. You'll probably enjoy it.

I took a picture of my creativity zone, here it is:

I was gonna sell tumbleweeds or pictures of tumbleweeds but someone's already done both of those.

Oh I definitely do, I just think of the long view too much, thinking about "will this sell" etc.

What I really want is something I can do with a 3D printer.

If I was in your position I'd definitely aim for something boring a basic. After a few weeks of not really sleeping you might not be as enthusiastic to spend 1 hour a night working on top of your regular job. For a while there I gave myself a gold star if I even did the dishes.

I would love to get into voice-over work...Would you charge for the work you do?

You should setup shop printing lost Lego pieces. There is always one in every set and it seems like a 3D printer would be perfect.
