Default Local Police scanners

Does anyone know where to buy a police scanner to listen to local police radio? I know Radioshack or the Source used to sell them but i checked at my local Source store and they told me they don't sell them anymore due to the fact they are going to be illegal in a year or so. Anyone know if this is true and whether or not there are any stores in the Calgary area that still sell police scanners?

You would only be able to listen to RCMP (for now). CPS and other systems now use digital systems that would be very hard to listen to for cheap. I don't know exactly what you would need, but the local supplier would probably be http://www.ntfc.ca/.

There are other online canadian dealers if you search.

What are you going to use it for?

My understanding is that Calgary uses a system which requires a very sophisticated scanner. I believe the frequency keeps changing every few seconds, which is why the cheaper scanners won't work here.

Actually I want it to listen to RCMP in my local area. Nothing illegal. I work for them.

It would not be worth trying to get the equipment required to monitor CPS frequencies, they will be changing their system. (Sooner rather then later).

If you want to do some research regarding the CPS radio system and the equipment required for monitoring, check out http://www.radioreference.com/

When I was in Red Deer I would listen to RCMP chatter, it was interesting. I have also listened to NY Port Authority/NYFD/NYPD and LAPD with interest as well.

Sometimes when there is a disaster they feature the radio traffic from that area, which can be interesting.

There's an APP that streams police scanners from across Canada - it had the RCMP for major centres and bigger rural areas.

Unfortunately, neither have CPS streams. Unless something has changed that I'm not aware of.

I use Tunein Radio app to listen to Police radio down in the states. Don't know if they have it for anywhere in Canada but man I would not want to be a cop in LA.
