Default New "security" measures being implemented at the Dome

http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=706626

Quote:
The Scotiabank Saddledome will be implementing enhanced guest security and safety measures over the course of the 2013-14 season. As a result, all guests and their belongings may be searched upon entry into the venue.

Guests are discouraged from bringing bags or items requiring inspection into the Scotiabank Saddledome with the goal of expediting entry as much as possible. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation with this matter. For more information, please e-mail Customer Service at customerservice@calgaryflames.com.

My thoughts: Tickets and merch must be down so need to implement a system to ensure no one is smuggling in their own twizzlers and drinks

Yes, because there are so many incidents of guns being brought to a hockey game.

How many incidents have they had to warrant these measures? As an attendee I've never felt like this was necessary, just purely based on how things appear on the surface.

I don't know, maybe there's incidents all over the place that they keep on the downlow.

This is the norm at all of the American rinks I've been to. I always make note to friends that being wanded with a metal detector and having to lift up the bottom of my jersey is only something that happens in the States. Depressing if it starts happening back up north.

Yeah, but if there ever WERE an incident, and it came out that the person simply carried a weapon into the arena in their bag, there would be MASSIVE outcry (and rightly so) that arena management was negligent.

It isn't that big of a deal and it doesn't really hold things up, so what's the problem?

You could say that about everywhere, especially crowded places. Should we be searching students at schools? Everyone as they enter a mall? You at work?
How about just everyone as they leave their homes?

I was hoping they were banning Edmonton, Vancouver, and Toronto fans.

But yeah, this isn't new, as pointed out it's been all season. They've done it at McMahon before, and at a lot of other arenas. It's not like its a full pat-down and 3D scanner. Quick cursory glance at backpacks and purses is all I've seen thus far.

This is an NHL mandate I believe and has been going on all season.

Unless they're going to start wanding people at the door (like they do in the States), they don't even give you a second look if you're not carrying a bag. Leave the giant purse at home and it won't even slow you down.

Obviously this is to reduce the already low chance of someone bringing a gun into the Dome but I'm sure management won't be upset if they also catch some Swedish Berry smugglers and Milk Dud dealers.

Before we went to a game last year, we were told they would search purses or backpacks. I never carry either of those, so it wasn't a big deal. We just put debit cards and cash and our ID in our pockets and went.

I carry a pocket knife - always have, always will. It is not a weapon. It has a 3.5 inch blade. If my ethical overlords declare that to be too menacing, I will barf. Big brother has to give it a rest at some point.

Sure it is. Why else would you need a knife at a hockey game?

It must be more of an NHL thing rather then a Dome thing as I have seen purses searched at a Flames game (poorly mind you, basically open it and they look quick and waive you through), but you can walk into a Hitmen game with a tote bag full of chips and juices and they don't say a thing.
