ex-Liberal leadership candidates in trouble with Elections Canada
http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/07...sion-on-debts/
They wanted to lead Canada but can't handle their own finances. Hopefully they see jail time, they had 6 years to pay off the debt.
Of course no mention on the CBC site about this...

I don't care what the law calls for, jail costs the tax payers $100,000 per year per inmate, so that is: (3/12)*3people*100,000 = $75,000, which doesn't include the loss of money from income taxes they may pay.
I don't understand why any person who calls themselves a Conservative would want to waste public money for something as dumb as this. They have to pay, I agree, but seize their assets, don't charge me money for their mistake.

I don't know the specifics or anything, but why not let them have more time to pay?

6 years is not enough? Why don't we give them 100 years to pay so they will be dead before they had to pay it back.

So I guess we should just shutdown all jails because they are too costly. Let's just give everyone house arrest instead. $75000 is a small price to pay to help prevent similar crimes in the future. If they are just going to get a slap on the wrist, then what motivates them and others to correct their behavior in the future?
I just have to shake my head in disbelief when I see posts like yours.

Failure to pay can bring a fine of $1,000 or up to three months in jail, but Hall Findlay says she believes she can work out a compromise with Elections Canada.

Who wants to bet they get the $1000 fine?

Is the goal to get the money from these people or make an example? Far more egregious things have gone on involving Elections Canada in the past few years...

Who's brushing anything off? I certainly didn't get that impression from his posts.
Do you disagree with Slava and think this is the most serious charge levied by Elections Canada recently?

Fire's right, not a peep from CBC. This would be a front pager if it were the conservatives.

Bev Oda getting a pension pisses me off 100 times more than this does.

1. Implying that I am advocating shutting down jails from what I posted is nothing short of a lie. There is a difference between taking too long to pay back a loan and killing someone.
2. Seizing assets is not a slap on the wrist, you take my car from me, and I am hooped. If need be, take part ownership of their house (assuming all of what I said can be done by the government in the eyes of the law). Charge interested and additional fees for the government effort it takes to seize the assets (and such seize more), but do not throw people in jail for ‘crimes’ such as these. The government gets what is owed, and the “crime” is paid.

I'm not brushing anything off at all. I think that the money should be paid back if its owing; no question about that. I would say the same if this were any other party. I just think that the point is to get the money back, with interest, so if it takes them 8 years instead of 6 then they pay more.

Well lets be honest. The "article" there from the National Post isn't exactly impressive. I don't know a whole lot more about the debts or what the court case is about after reading that piece. Truthfully, I didn't know anything about this until this thread, but its not exactly enlightening either.

Smart of the Cons to change the law midstream. Hopefully the next government is smart enough to do that when the Cons are in their leadership race. Lower the amount that someone can donate during a leadership race to tighten the screws on the Conservatives.
In other news, Dean Del Mastro and his clan are still in the process of laundering money and trying to hide it from the Canadian public. That is something that is certainly jail worthy.
