Did you lock the phone using find my iPhone when it appeared on the map? I would lock it and put a message on the home screen.
If it's some kid and the phone is locked they might be less inclined to keep the phone and return it. If you don't lock it then I think they can put it back to factory settings and then use it on a new plan.

Yes, I locked it and put a message on to call if found as I wasn't sure if someone had originally picked it up or if it was still missing. Either way, I sure hope someone does the right thing here.

Yeah sadly it sounds like this is a lost cause unless the phone is locked. I'd be shocked if someone actually returned the phone. Sorry to hear, I got my phone jacked once so I know the feeling.

I lost an iPhone 4 about three months after getting it. Had to do a bunch of stick handling with Rogers to get another phone for the least amount of money.

People don't return iphones. Just ask my gf, who has lost a 4 and a 4S in the last three months. She decided to go back to BB in hopes that when she loses this one, someone will return it.

I've found an iPhone in a gas station bathroom once, I returned it to the desk, and told the two bus drivers (it was a small town where the gas station was where the Acadien Lines (Greyhound) buses stop).
I found a Blackberry yesterday, and was able to find the rightful owner.
Seriously people, if you lost your phone you'd want someone to return it to you. If you find a phone do the same.
Really it isn't that hard.
You can post on their facebook, or text their contacts saying you found this phone, how do I get it back to the owner. (I suppose if it's locked that's different, not sure how do go about that)

Might have the opposite effect, someone might chuck it down a sewer thinking they are doing the poor sucker a favour and disposing of the blackberry permanently.

Losing two phones in three months? If I were you I'd make sure I witnessed her taking her birth control pill. Every. Single. Day.

Well don't do what my buddy just did.
He managed to get ahold of the person who found his phone. She's a crackhead located in the downtown eastside of Vancouver. He arranges to meet her outside the crackhotel and get his IPhone back for $200, which is what she supposedly paid for it. He gives her the money, but she tells him that the phone is inside, and she will go get it.
She doesn't come out of the crackhotel. He phones the police. After laughing at him, the police enter the crackhotel and pull random junkies out for varying offences (they had a reason to be in the crackhouse, and are now legally able to arrest people for things they see going on in the hallways). The police are unable to find the woman who has taken his IPhone and money.
Several days later, my buddy is able to track his phone to a seady apartment block in Surrey. The police arrive again, but as they are unable to locate the exact room can now do nothing. My buddy claims that his phone has now been permanently deactivated.
That being said, I've had good experiences too. I left my phone on a bus once...got it retunred. Unfortunately it was found by a high school kid who decided to phone every guy in my book and tell them I was high on acid. He phone every girl in my book and asked them out....even it was their mother who answered. In the end I had some explaining to do, probably alienated a few people permanently, but got a few dates out of the deal too.

Could have used this advice earlier. The exact same thing happened to me!!!!
So, we have officially determined that we will not see the phone again. Find my phone doesn't really serve a purpose if someone knows of its existance. I have read a few things about some other apps that work better that I will install on my phone and my wifes next phone.

I found an Iphone at the dog park and returned it to a fido kiosk (I saw they were on fido)...I wonder if they ever got it back to the owner.
