Broken Jaw : looking for liquid recipes
My son collapsed on the parade ground during the final parade of his army cadets this week-end, breaking his jaw. It has been wired shut, and I was just looking to see if any of you have had any experience with this and / or if there are any blender recipes out there in the Collective.
Thanks

Don't have any experience with this, but from a nutritional standpoint, I'd imagine the hardest thing to get enough of would be protein.
I'd invest in a large tub of weigh protein. Make fruit smoothies with it. Makes sure he gets a couple of scoops of protein a day at a minimum. The other challenge will be ensuring he gets enough calories. There's always milk shakes for that.

avoid strawberry milk shakes with real strawberrys, the seeds are a pain, but other than that milk shakes are good, smoothies etc

Had my jaw wired for a month. Really, anything blended should work. I remember a porkchop dinner with applesauce all blended up was just fine once I got used to the idea.

I was on a strict liquid diet last year for a while and the protein shakes I was drinking were great at filling you up & keeping you full plus you can get creative with them & add fruit (bananas, berries etc) or change what you make them with (milk, water etc). The brand I liked are called: GNC Properformance Lean Muscle Meal. They come in chocolate, vanilla & strawberry. (The ones where you buy a box of packets that you make have 40 grams of protein each - so you never feel hungry & your hair won't fall out...the pre-made shakes only have 20ish grams of protein.)
Alternatively, you can look at blending some of his favourite soups (and then straining them to make sure they're smooth...).
Best of luck with this - what a terrible injury!

You didn't mention an age, but things like ensure or meal replacement shakes are also pretty good at replacing some of the nutrients that may be harder to get through liquid meals.

When my dad broke his jaw playing hockey at age 17 my grandma would literally put his dinner in the blender. Apparently it's not so bad.

fruit, yogurt, protein, and a good amount of baby spinach. It covers a lot of food groups to keep you healthy and the spinach basically disappears when blended

I've heard some people say they ate baby food after jaw surgery. I'm not sure if it would be liquid enough for a completely immobile broken jaw, but at least would be available in various varieties. From tasting bits of my kid's food when they were babies the store-bought stuff is often pretty bland, but it's pretty easy to find recipes for home-made blended food for babies.

You can add veggies to a fruit smoothie without affecting the taste too much. I make a yoghurt, banana, strawberry, broccoli, spinach and milk smoothie everyday and it's good. Just tastes like a strawberry banana smoothie really.

I have experience with both the broken jaw and collapsing on the parade square. Both suck.
I was fortunate to not have to deal with having my jaw wired shut but have a steel plate and four screws in it. I still could not eat for quite some time, or was not supposed to rather. I had to finally tough it out and start chewing after losing 20 pounds in 5 days.
The doctors were giving me "ensure" which tastes like crap and is really no substitute for food...but it should help deal with hunger issues as it does fill you up.
I hope for his sake they lined his jaw/teeth up properly...they didn't with mine and I am now dealing with that 15 years later.

I've seen a couple people collapse on the parade square before and a couple during ruck marches as well. Is definitely dangerous, but the ones I have witnessed have never ended up in major injuries. Good luck to your son. People don't realize it, but standing in one spot for an extended period of time can be strenuous on the body. There were plenty of times where I felt light headed on the parade square, especially when it's hot out.

When I was in high school (holy crap, that's 20 years ago now!) I had a friend who broke his jaw. His favorite thing to blend was nachos and cheese sauce. Sometimes he would add salsa. I even tried it and it was pretty good. After the nachos have been in the cheese sauce for a while they become soggy but it isn't as gross as it sounds.
You can probably take a nacho platter, and blend it up. May require more cheese than normal.
