Flag Football Team Looking for Linemen
Hey CPers,
I play on the Renegades in the Calgary Flag Football League and we're looking for a couple of guys to round out our offensive line.
There is full contact blocking on the line, so size is obviously an asset, but I am 6'4 and 225lbs but you don't need to be HUGE - arm span, leg/core strength, and hand/foot speed are all assets.
Previous flag or tackle football experience is a bonus, but not a must - it is a relatively simple game to pick up and the rules are not complex on the line.
If anyone is interested, send me a PM.
More information on the league is here.
Thanks!

If you have blocking, why not get rid of the flags?

Do you have to use the rings in flag anymore?

Well on the line is the only time there is contact to speak of, once the ball is thrown it all stops. No receivers are allowed to block and there is no tackling.
I really thought there would be some more traction on this. I know there are a few other people on CP that play in the CFFL, and can attest to how much fun it is.
If you enjoy softball but are looking for something a bit competitive and physically demanding this is really the prefect sport. Also don't feel that because you're on the wrong side of 40 you won't be able to play. Our best linemen (other than me of course) was 52 last year. Old man strength FTW.

Can you PM me with the costs, and game and practice schedule idea.
I'm on the dark side of 40 but the people that know me can attest to my offensive line man like size.

I would be interested - what night(s) do you play, and how much would it cost?

The league is great. One of the biggest in north america with 80 teams again this year I believe.

Was involved with the league a few years ago. It's great, I would recommend it to anyone.
As for me, I'm too small for any serious line play. But if you're looking for a shut down cornerback...

I played line in the league a few years ago, it's a good time. Very well run league.
You definitely don't need to be super big or strong to play line, especially in the lower divisions, it's mostly about foot and hand speed. Having some decent pass blocking fundamentals doesn't hurt though.

I'm big enough and strong enough, and I have decent fundementals. But I don't have the footspeed that I used to have.

Hey guys since we’ve put it out there that we are looking for people there has been a lot of interesting from a fair amount of people. We are having a team discussion tonight to determine costs and our needs. I will update all those who have expressed interest tomorrow via PM.
Thanks for all the replies, also trust me you’d never want to see me or anyone else on our team in lingerie.

I read that thread title wrong. Kinda disappointing.
Having said that, I played halfback in highschool - wasn't very good, but I enjoyed my time nonetheless.

Just curious (as I've never played flag football with contact on the line) -- does it really add much to the game? Is there a greater ability to run the ball? How does it change your offensive/defensive scheme? If it's just pass blocking, does it actually result in sacks/pressure on the QB?

There's still no running, or next to no running because there's no downfield blocking. All lineman are live though, so can catch passes, so you have to be wary of that especially on short yardage, keeps the linebackers or rushers on their tows a bit. With a good line, your QB has more time, then just a few seconds like touch where you know they'll be a guy in your face in exactly a few seconds each snap. Defensively you can change your schemes constantly lining up 3 or 4 guys in the box every snap changing up from where and how many are rushing to throw off the linemen. My team in Kelowna does this extremely well. Always have 4 guys lined up like their gonna rush every snap (8 men on the field rather than 7 like here though).
There's more, but most importantly, there's really no place in touch football for big slow guys that like to play like me . That and you get to hit people

Its almost too bad that there's no down field blocking, but I would expect that with no pads, a guy like me would probably kill somebody.
I remember a bunch of years ago I played in a flag league that allowed down field blocking and people were getting run over left right and center, it was awesome.
But the hardest skill for a line man is pass blocking, you have to really understand your reads in order to be good at it, and make decisions based on pressure packages.

I am not sure I understand flag football. Why take the contact out of the sport? Smashing people is the most enjoyable thing.
