North Carolina Might Make Best Available Sea-level Rise Predictions Illegal
North Carolina Coastal Federation informs us:
Quote:
A bill that could be introduced when the N.C. General Assembly convenes Wednesday would prevent state agencies and local governments from planning for the higher seas that many scientists expect later this century as the climate warms.
Instead, the bill requires that any state forecast for future sea-level rise be based on the historical rise of the last century, and it prohibits state agencies and institutions and local governments from developing their own forecasts based on a different standard.
|
Ah, the land of the free. Well not free science of course.
And here's another way of putting it:
ttp://io9.com/5914378/north-carolina-considers-outlawing-accurate-predictions-of-sea-level-rise
Quote:
Faced with predictions that sea levels in the coastal areas of North Carolina will rise by a meter in the next century, legislators are considering bold action: making those predictions illegal. A bill being circulated in the Tarheel state would force scientists to estimate future sea levels on a linear path based on trends since 1900 — in other words, based on the simple assumption that trends always move in a straight line, no matter what.

Why you ask? Because of money of course.
Quote:
So the members of the developers’ lobbying group NC-20 say the sea will rise only 8 inches, because … because …
We’ve got resorts to build and we don’t care what the rest of the ocean does – our sea isn’t going to rise by more than 15.6 inches.

Unsuspecting?
If we get the news up here I would imagine any investor worth his salt would have the info he needs. Maybe they can do independent analysis.

My favorite part of this won't happen for a while, but if they pass this I can't wait for them to cry for federal money when their coastal areas are destroyed.

And the feds can tell them helping them will violate North Carolina law because they can only provide bail out money for the damage caused by a linear increase in sea level.
NORTH CAROLINA -- We banned the Parabola.

so the key is to buy land a few hundred miles inland. Then when the coast of North Carolina falls into the sea, hello Costa Del Lex. Luthorville. Marina del Lex and .... Otisburg!

They are definitely trying. I think the big difference is that they will probably get voted out next election, the east wont stand for it and even people in the west are sick of their newest conservative bills too. (Environment, Internet Regs, Crime Bill) The average person in Canada grudgingly gave them power and was looking for a reason to hate the CPC and they got it.
Whereas those in power in NC will probably be there for a long time.
As well, I think we can agree what's going on in NC is an entirely different level of crazy than what's going on here. The US will always be far more conservative than us up here.
