Vikings! In Calgary?
So this weekend past I took the kids to the Military Museums on Crowchild.
Had a great visit, highly recommend it. But what we saw after was the reason for this thread.
Out in the field between the museums and the Flames community rinks were full on Vikings. Armour helmets sheilds bashing each other with swords and axes. Some were target shooting with bows and spears.
Anyone ever see these guys, or is anyone here one of them?
I talked to one guy who said they were having a real big show (same place) this coming Sunday with other groups.
Forgot to ask what time. Found a website for them, The Sons of Fenrir.
http://www.vinlandvikings.org/sonsoffenrir.html
My son went crazy, so w e will be back Sunday. If anyone else is into SCA kind of stuff, you may want to come out. Don't know what time, I would guess 1300 or so.

The Museum of the Regiments is to me a must see for everyone with a kid. The amount of history in that museum is awe inspiring.
Funny enough when I took my dad through there, we went through one of the exhibits and he pointed at two pictures and said, that guy looks a lot like you.
Sure enough it was me, so in a odd sense I'm a piece of history until they pull the pictures down.
I might have to go and check this viking thing out though.

Are they LARPing? I see people doing stuff like that in Prince's Island sometimes... looks weird to me.

The best part is the museum is free for former members and their kids.

I can't be the only one who thought the Minnesota Vikings were going to be playing a preseason game here .

Yup, I've run my nephews through there a few times, I always make sure I throw some money in the collection bin, they've done an outstanding job of collecting and restoring their displays, and I don't know if you've seen their not for display archives, but the stuff in there is awesome.

collection bin also goes to older vets, I beleive (not sure). I always put in $, in case I am showing up one day with my hand sticking out.
When I took my boy and girls through, we went to the Navy part as well. The boy looks around and at the top of his lungs says "how can they fit anyone if they are stuck on boats". We went back to the Army exhibit.

Yeah, I'm the same way, a large percentage of the bin does go to the veterans food bank and other veteran programs.
Even as a old infantry man, I actually really like what they did with the naval section of the museum with the fully assembled Banshee fighter jet, and the full sized naval guns. They also have one of the few surviving enigma devices in there. The airforce section is lacking a bit, but there are some amazing photo's and exhibitions there as well.
But the best part are the various Calgary unit sections and some of the scale mockups.
you can literally spend a day in there going through everything and still not hit it all.
From my understanding though the CF-5 that's mounted outfront is going to be replaced with a CF-18, they also tried to get one of the surviving Mosquito light bombers.
To me its just a very cool place and what adds to it is talking to some of the vets that work there.
I was talking to one old timer who went over to Korea as a tank gunner. He stated that he was scared a few times but he never got angry at the North Koreans until he got caught in a artillary barrage and his comic got shredded. "A nickle was a lot of money back them" he grumbled at my nephew.

Sorry, would have put that in other sports.
As to the acronym questions, I have no idea what they stand for.
These guys were fighting and being scored by someone when they managed to strike the opponent with the obviously blunted weapons.

LARPing is live action role playing.
Kind of like World of Warcraft in real life with fake swords etc.

Yeah, that's an awesome thing when you think about it.
My dad was really excited and proud when he saw the pictures, because when I was in the Military I was basically estranged from my parents so they never got pictures of me in uniform or letters to them from me talking about my experiences.

I don't have one picture of me in my dress uniform, not one.
My folks and kids have been riding my a$$ to get the Peacekeeping Service medal....just not a priority, but I guess it should be.

I saw this thread title right after reading the zombie thread, and though holy crap, zombie attack in miami, vikings invading Calgary, maybe 2012 is the end of the world.
