Default Big dog attack problem.

So another mini dog got destroyed yesterday when a mastiff got loose. I know everyone says it's the owner's fault and not the dogs, so how about a solution. For certain types of breeds they should make it mandatory for an owner to take an obedience class or some sort of professional training.

I've never had a big dog, but if a pitbull or husky or akita is properly trained, if it ran out of the yard would it not attack anyone?

I'd be fine with that. Though I doubt they could ever legislate it for many reasons.

Really? why? didn't some places in Ontario ban pit bulls altogether?

If making people take classes is an option, I would rather that they make owners take a class no matter what the breed of dog is. The problems can be caused by the large or small dogs, so I think it would be better off for everyone to gain some knowledge.

I don't know how it would work, but maybe a one-time course to obtain a license? Even if it was an online course that cost 50 bucks or something. It could be similar to obtaining a learners license.

An English Mastiff? They're not known for being aggressive in any way. No way you'd get that kind of legislation for this breed. They're no more aggressive than a lab or golden retriever.

it was a bull mastiff, but should that matter? an english mastiff has just as much teeth, and who knows what some of these crappy dog owners do to their dog.

It's a combination of owner and dog. You can't ignore that some dog breeds were developed to be agressive. These traits are hard to 100% remove. That is not to say that any dog won't be agressive if treated improperly, but some have much bigger margins of error.

Take the dog away from the owner. Harsh fines. These bread to be vicious dogs getting loose happens too often.

People really need to be stern with their dogs and get them socialized really well early. I used to have a Doberman and the closest she ever came to attacking a dog was accidentally sitting on a smaller dog while in the dog park.

Also, if I knew my dog acted aggressively towards other dogs, I'd muzzle it, or take it for walks where there are less people/dogs.

Was the lady walking on the other persons lawn? Did the little dog enter into private property? Not that it would be an excuse, I'm just curious.

Sad to lose a little friend.

It could be a good idea to write a test for adoption of an animal. If you fail then you know you need help. If you pass you have NO excuse. You are responsible for the other life.

Two agencies we looked at adopting from required a long ass form and questionairre to fill out.

One of them rejected me - the other accepted. Odd... I think my dog has one of the best lives ever and gets a long with almost every dog it's ever encountered at the park.

Some of those little yappy minature dogs can be way more aggressive than the larger dogs. Many a time I'll be out walking my Golden Retriever and we'll pass by a yard with one of those small dogs and the little bugger is just going nuts...

Maybe the little s**t deserved what he got? Maybe it was being super annoying and attacking the mastif and the mastif just decided to put a stop to it.

Not saying this is what happened but to be honest many a time I've felt like giving one of those little yappy rats a swift kick in the balls.

Sometimes the little dogs get away with way more than a bigger dog would.. and their owners let them....

Sure but a little dog can't do the damage of a big dog.
