Default Recommendations for Roof Vent Cover Repairs

Hey guys, hoping to tap into the vast knowledge base of CP here. So over the last month and a bit during one of the chinooks(?), one of my metal vent covers seems to have flown off (I only noticed this now since it was in a room I don't usually go into).

First time house owner and now that my house is out of warranty, things seem to be breaking left right and centre. Since the rain is coming down hard these days I'm hoping to get this fixed fairly quickly. Does anyone have a recommendation for a company that'll repair this for a fair price quickly and won't rip me off before I start looking in the yellow pages?

Here's a picture of the damage
Spoiler!

Did a quick search and couldn't find anything.
Thanks for the help!

No idea how to hire anyone, but you obviously have means to get up there if you took the pic. Drill new holes in it, get some roofing nails and a tube of roofing/shingling caulk. slide it in under the top and side shingles. Leave it on top of the bottom shingles. Nail it in and then put some patch on the nails. You probably have more than one, so you can look at another one.

If things are falling apart now you better get used to doing stuff like this on your own home, because it happens frequently.

edit, I just realized you took that pic from a window from the nice dry warm inside of your house.

Anyways I 'd find a way up there to cover it up, put the vent back and drill a screw in or something to keep the rain out of the hole before it leaks through your ceiling drywall.

Why does it look like there are 2 vents right beside each other ?

Thanks for the reply! I'll try to find someone I can borrow a ladder from so I can at least cover it up for the time being since the window I took this picture from doesn't open up so I can't just climb onto the roof.
Maybe I can get to it from another window.

Not sure why there are two brown vents right next to each other either... I vaguely remember there were three vents (the two brown ones and one metal) there before but that doesn't seem right that they would be so close together. In any case that metal vent cover has long since gone missing. Scouted around my yard and had a quick look around the windows I can see my roof and didn't see anything.

If it is gone maybe just get a hunk of metal you can cut and slip in over the hole the same as where it was. You can get hunks of sheet metal at Cdn Tire. drill some holes in it and use roofing nails. It'll rust before long if you dont' paint it so it would only be a temporary solution but, you really should cover it up before rain does damage.

Or I guess just get another roof vent and replace.

The black vents are attic ventilation, the one missing would be a bathroom/kitchen fan vent, similar to the one in the bottom of your picture, you can pick them up at pretty much any home depot type store, they'll either be called goosenecks or roof jacks depending on who you talk to.

To be honest that's a pretty stupid place to put it right between the attic vents but that been done.

If you're going to do it yourself you're going to need some tin snips to trim the base to a size which will fit between the black vents, then a caulking gun and some blackjack tar to seal around it because you've had to cut the base down to fit it between the vents.

If you live down south I can probably drop by and pop it in for you quick on Sunday evening and all it'll cost you is a six pack and you'll have to grab the vent for us sometime this weekend. If you're elsewhere in the city I'll have to see how it fits in the schedule.

Also hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it looks like you've got some shingles that have blown off too. If you look just under those black vents there's a shingles lying at an angle to the rest of the roof, it doesn't belong there, that's a cap used to cover to ridges, while it's possible it was left by accident/laziness by your original roofers, it a lot more likely it blew off either your or one of your neighbors houses during one of the wind storms.
