Default Montreal taxi driver appears in court over YouTube hit-and-run video

I could have sworn there was a thread on this but I may have missed it during my quick search. I'll try to link the videos but kinda graphic, especially the second one.

Anyhow:

http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/04...and-run-video/

A 47-year-old taxi driver was in court Monday to face charges after a man, 23, was run over in Montreal early Sunday morning.

Guercy Edmond appeared before a judge at the Montreal courthouse where he was charged with assault causing bodily harm, among other things. His bail hearing was set for Wednesday.

“He was under attack,” Edmond’s lawyer said afterward.

Spoiler!

EDIT: to bold the text for anybody hopping in the thread

I would have ran him over too. Guy was obviously fearing for his life from those guys and was just trying to get the hell out of there.

Ok, I finally watched the first video. Why didn't the cabbie just drive away during anytime of that first minute or so of the video?

Kind of looks like the other guys in that idiot group were getting in his way no matter which direction he tried to go. Also there's a car in the way... Eventually the punks started hopping on the cab and wacking the windshield.

True, but right at the beginning of the video he could have drove away (the same direction he ultimately did at the end), or again at 1:14 he could have kept driving away but instead turned around again.

I get that he was being attacked, but why not just cut your losses and get out of there?

Ya, Im not sure posting the second video does any good for anyone...

anyways, so many people seem to be defending the cabbie saying he was just trying to drive away... if so, why does he intentionally turn around and drive into them when there is a perfectly good road in the opposite direction?

My guess is both parties are to blame.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montre...t-and-run.html

At Edmond's bail hearing, court heard Edmond picked up three men on Saint Laurent Boulevard near Milton Street and the passengers disputed the fare on the meter after the taxi was stuck in a traffic jam. It's unclear if the meter read $5 or $9, court was told.

Edmond testified, saying he tried to call 911 but was unsuccessful. His lawyers said he was headed in the direction of the police station when he drove away.

A Montreal police detective at the hearing said the passengers were very intoxicated and made remarks about race and female genital mutilation to the driver. The three passengers are white and the accused is black.

Can't say I feel sorry for the guy. What do you expect when you start smashing up a car with someone in it as they are trying to drive away? I guess it's all fun and games...until someone's face gets run over!

The hearing was also told the man hit by the cab suffered from a perforated spleen, two fractured ribs, lung lesions and bruises. He remains in hospital.

Commented on this in the funny and cool thread. First of all, why they heck has it been posted in funny and cool? And then reposted. Not funny or cool.

Anyway, yeah, the whole video confuses me. The cabbie definitely has reason to feel threatened. But he also seems to have some time to get away at various points in the process. He could have driven down several of the other roads much more safely to both himself and the others. It almost looks like there was an argument and he was bent on saying his piece until things got really out of hand.

Haven't looked at the second video, not sure if it shows any of the exchange between the cabbie and passengers or attackers.

I do know that racial tensions are often higher in Montreal even though it is more multicultural. There does seem to be a 'this is our land' mentality in many areas of Quebec, just like France.

In the second video it looks like the cabbie's door is open and the guy who gets run over kicks it shut, kicks it again and says something at the cabbie...And from there things go really sideways.

Gross.

But pretty deserved. Drunk people are idiots. Actually, a lot of people are just idiots in general.

THIS is a Darwin moment.

Also, is his windsheild smashed in by the stomping?

If so, he might not have seen the guy in front of him. Just sayin...

If he did see the guy though, this is terrible, and the cabbie should be in jail for life.
