Very strange letter in the mail....
I received a letter from Service Canada, National Search Unit, and apparently my former employer from the 6 months I lived in Vancouver (god I wish I had a MIB memory erase stick) is looking for me/my contact info. For some unpaid benefits? Pension? Letter is kinda vague, and so is my memory of the whole situation. But it states they are trying to locate me because they may owe me benefits. I guess not having a landline since 1996 didn't help, but holy crap, my folks are listed with a very unique last name, and you could call any car dealer in calgary, and they could have found me. How about Facebook? Seems odd the frikkin government is tracing me for them.
So I anyway, lets say I paid into a benefits package or pension, 13 years ago, would I get some sort of interest? What should I expect. Lets say I paid in $1000 in yr:1999, what would a guy expect in 2012? I am morbidly curious about this, and I am assuming I will have no answers until Monday. I am sure I will find out there is only a spanky cheque for $22.16 with my name on it, but you would think they wouldn't go to the trouble to track me down via the Government, for some piddly amount.
Oish! The suspense is killing me. I love free money! Cause it's free!

If it's from the government, it might have to do with some CPP and EI overpayment or something. $22.16 is probably about right. Keep us posted though.

My understanding is the benefits company (Morneau Sheppell) used the government to track me down. Exact wording:
Quote:
Morneau Sheppell has asked for our help to locate individuals for which they do not have a current address and /or whom they may owe benefits.

It is like a real Nigerian scam letter, but from Canada, and not a scam.

22.16 seems about right. It sounds like they're moving into bankruptcy protection and as a former employee you're at the top of the receivership list. I can't see why else the gov't would be doing their legwork.

Just send $1500 Western Union to Dr. G Ubutu, Nigeria as administration charge and we will transfer the $5,000,000 owed to you from Morneau Sheppell.

I had the same thing happen when I was with the government for 15months. They sent me a letter asking me to confirm my address and then I called them and it was $900 cheque with taxes deducted from my pension plan.

LOL, no. There is a phone number to contact on it. I am guessing I paid into the company pension, and they want me to cash out. It was a big unionized dealiehoo.
We will see on Monday. I reverse looked up the Benefits Company, the Gov't department, and the name of the contactee on the letter, and they are all legit. I am just curious how much. 12 years is a decent chunk of interest if it is anything more than 5 percent.

Regardless of whether or not they are in receivership, it's probable that any money owed to you would be in a trust account. As trustees they have a duty to find you no matter how small the amount owing is.

Talked to the guy earlier. I paid into a the company pension, and they owe me some cash. I do not know the amount though. They will send me a package in the mail in a couple weeks.
