Default Best gym in Calgary?

What is the top gym in Calgary to get a membership at for weight lifting, and why?

Thanks.

Maybe merge with the personal trainer thread?

I'll hijack this thread a bit for the same topic. I currently work out at Talisman and find it is just way too busy to get a solid work out finished, even if I wait until 9PM to go. I can never plan my workout because the machines/benches/free weights I need are always taken when I need them. Anybody know of a less busy gym in the area?

I actually work out there too and it's nuts in that place at times. I almost couldn't handle it in January.

You could try Heavens but the equipment is a bit older.

Anytime is a great gym but just be prepared to be stared at and hit on by a lot of dudes.

Most gyms are the exact same.

Just go to one that is close to where you live/work.

I guess I should have said, which is the nicest.

As in good maintenance, clean change room, parking space, up to date equipment/treadmills.

I tried out Westside Recreational Centre today, it was pretty good. Big, really big.

This is a challenging city to live in... what do you guys call all these cars that are always lined up in every lane at every light? We don't have that in Sask..

When I was younger, it didn't matter so much, but the biggest factor for me now is location- it has to be very close to home. I have only been a member at YMCA, U of C, and World Health, so can't speak on the others.

World Health has a 24 hour facility on Macleod that may attract many shift workers, along with numerous locations across the city that all have essentially the same equipment. A negative might be the pushy sales people (you'll get this everywhere but the YMCA though) when you sign up. Also, I don't believe there are any steam rooms, jacuzzi's or saunas at world health, but I might be remembering incorrectly. The cardio equipment were not typically equipped with personal tvs when I was a member, but that might have changed. They experience your standard level of busyness?? in the evening hours- not too bad.

The YMCA is a decent membership to have as the facilities offer considerably more than just work out equipment- pools, gymnasiums, team sports, daycare, etc. The biggest negative are the bloody kids, making it arguably the busiest gym in the city. Once again, when I was a member, most of the cardio equipment did not have personalized tvs etc, but that may have changed by now. The membership process is simple, not pushy and offers two tiers- membership and membership plus. Membership plus is basically a nicer change room without annoying kids, has a few chairs, and a jacuzzi. The regular change room in DT has a steam room, but I don't think the one in crowfoot does.

Goodlife seems to be a popular choice now, which is where I am considering moving over to, now that World Health membership is done.

I like going to Crossfit Athlete Inside in Canyon Meadows. Great overall level of fitnessat the gym and the access to training with the membership is great. There is a lot of olympic lifting techniques mixed in with crossfit, and my strength has improved greatly especially in functional/dynamic movements (i.e. where it counts).

Do they actually teach you proper form though? I've read some horror stories about crossfit where the goal is reps and form is sacrificed. With olympic lifts that can be incredibly dangerous.

I like the crossfit system for what it combines, but dislike the ease through which a trainer can become certified (only takes a weekend). It is odd to say this, but sometimes the competition structure of the sport is bad because it encourages overdoing things but sometimes thats the best part. Overall I notice there is a general inconsistent nature to the quality of training and fitness level of the group you're in, so you have to take care of yourself and be aware.

For example I had one great crossfit trainer at world health, and one awful one. At Crossfit AI in canyon meadows, they have all been great at teaching proper form and how to progressively increase weight and not overdo it on total reps. I made incredible gains (both physical and mental) through proper training at AI and "undid" a lot of terrible habits and poor form that was built into my motions after about 1.5 years of tutelage under the crappy trainer at WHC.

Of course, I have also witnessed when individuals do not respect their own limits at AI and put themselves in danger because of it. At some point I think people have to recognize when they are crossing the line and just let pride go.

I think that's the dangerous part about cross-fit. From what I've read a lot places take pride in the idea of crossing the line. Places treating the onset of Rhabdomyolysis as if it's a joke and encouraging training to the point of vomiting. Obviously that's not everywhere, but it seems to be a part of the culture in a lot of places. There's obviously good ideas behind the structure, but I think it can be easily abused.

If you worked in the me and lived in the SW and the bat gym was in the deep SE, would you go regularly. To me it makes sense that the gym is close to work or home, so going there is easy......

MRU. It's huge, has all the machines, weights, rooms, etc. It's the cleanest gym I've ever been to and has a bunch of young hotties.
