Default Personal Training in Calgary

Hey guys,

I have been weight training for about nine months. My progress is beginning to stall, however, so I figured getting a trainer would be a good way to kick things up a notch. Plus the weights are getting heavier so form is becoming a concern.

Unfortunately getting personal training at the gym i'm currently a member of requires a minimum investment of just under $900 (12 sessions)...

Is this par for the course? If not, where can I obtain more cost-effective help? Are there any worthwhile independent gyms in this city? Feel free to share personal training experiences as well.

Thanks, CP!

Some of my former colleagues - who have years of education and experience - charge $67 - $75 / hour. I would call that the higher end of the "gym trainer" spectrum.

Personally, I think it's much more important to look for someone with education (Exercise Physiology!) and experience with training or competing at high levels of sport / competition (or both) rather than looking at price.

That being said, given your situation I think you'll find most trainers quite helpful. The only problem is that it's such an in demand position that most gyms fill it with any jock off the street who's worked out for a few years - chances are they don't really know what they're doing. They'll give you a good workout and motivation, but you may also pick up some bad advice and habits (which, in the grand scheme of things, probably isn't a big deal).

Sigh, didn't see this thread when I made my request for the top gym in Calgary.

But I will ask here again, what is the top gym in Calgary for weight lifting, and why?

Stand 100 m away from a boot camp on Prince's Island or Riley Park, and just copy what they are doing.

What kind of exercises are you talking about? There are a lot of forums out there, depending on what you're doing, where you can post a video of yourself and get back incredibly insightful criticism and advice for free.
