Default How do you stay informed in today's world?

Don't watch any TV news, google news, Slashdot, ars technica, cpuck, zerohedge are about it for me. I don't use twitter. If a story interests me, I'll read quite a few articles from google news on it. I find I read a lot of the comments too.

After the 2008/9 downturn, I felt like I needed to be more aware about political and economic news.

So any better ideas on how to become a better informed citizen? Looking for the real truth, deep analysis, unbiased etc. I appreciate hearing multiple sides and angles on controversial topics too.

I guess I am looking for sources that people regularly turn to and feel that they are well served and bettered for the time they invest.

This is embarrassing, but I have found out about more breaking news here, than anywhere else. Most times I am beating people to the punch on major world events by the hive mind here, than through regular channels.

If there isn't a thread about it here, I won't know about it.

I usually have CNN on as background noise when I'm working in the afternoon. CP is also pretty good. Usually anything worth reading is on here within a day or two (or on here before....)

If its not on CP, the cover of Yahoo, or a hot topic in the office I am likely missing out.

My social media gives plenty of interesting links to very varying sources. I know that sort of people. I usually only read proper articles. Columns and blogs are 99% pointless and 90% unreliable.

(On the other hand blogs have the best stuff about gaming.)

Newspapers on the weekends, a weekly news magazine and documents (from TV or internet).

That's about it. I'm still a firm believer in traditional "proper" journalism.

I used to listen to radio various radio news a lot, but that's faded out, which is a shame.

I watch BBC World News every morning while having breakfast, Twitter, CP, check Google news once in a while, and I listen to a fair bit of AM radio at work.

Al Jazeera has a ton of stuff you won't hear elsewhere, and it can be a real kick in the nuts actually. NY Times can be a good read. Boingboing.net is a neat blog as well, but not really 'news'.
