I just had sushi tonight at the sumo lounge in eau claire and it was fabulous. The salmon sashimi was soooo yummy. The best stuff on earth I swear.
I know how to make sushi. I usually make unagi and california rolls because I can find decent tasting salmon sashimi anywhere. Where do these resturaunts get this awesome salmon sashimi from?
Is it possible for a regular guy to go buy it somewhere? I know I won't get it as cheap as the big chains do because I'm not buying in bulk.
I'd perfer no seafood out of the oceans and just river stuff aswell. Is the salmon you eat in sushi restaurant out of the oceans? I hope not I heard anything from the ocean nowadays is toxic.
Stuff out of the oceans is fine. No idea where you would have gotten the idea that it's toxic. Maybe there are certain types of fish from certain regions that you have to be careful about, but for the most part I can't see why you would have anything to worry about.
Always reminds me of City Wok from Southpark. I see their truck driving around and it always makes me chuckle.
Salmon live in the ocean and return to rivers only to spawn and die. Some salmon return to fresh water for a couple of years before they spawn but they are extremely rare and would be considerably smaller than their ocean counterparts. There should be no excessive contamination in Salmon, the higher in the food chain the higher the concentration of toxins. Whales, dolphins, sharks, etc would contain high levels of toxins if there where pollutants in the area.

Reason: Added clarification about "river" salmon

Just avoid anything from the Gulf or Pacific and you should be fine.

I don't understand. Why avoid anything from the Pacific?
If you're eating fish from one particular region of Japan's coast, yeah, maybe you have to be a little more alert than usual. But you shouldn't panic and not eat anything from the Pacific ocean, that's crazy.
He is confusing wild salmon with farmed salmon. It has nothing to do with rivers or oceans. Farmed salmon are restricted to a small area in netted pens and while it is often in open ocean, it can lead to more contamination or disease.

ill tell you that the wild salmon from the ocean beats any farmed salmon any day or any salmon that you can get from non ocean water.

Google Fallout, bioaccumulation, internal emmiters and the petkau effect.
Blu Seafood near Macleod and Southland has good sushi grade salmon and tuna. You buy it frozen, but I believe all sushi grade fish must be flash frozen before it can be sold here.

Sadly, most salmon farms are located in the river mouths which are the major spawning migration routes for salmon. As a result of this, all salmon, even 'wild' salmon, get a good does of the hormones, anti-biotics, chemical nutrients, and other crap that the farms put into their waters.
Clearly, 'wild' salmon will have a much lower concentration of these things in their bodies, but all salmon will have some as they are all getting at least two doses of this chemical cocktail during their lifecycle.

that just further helps my comment... i made no illusion that wild salmon didn't get anything bad in them
21 Century Seafood sells sushi grade fish to businesses and will also sell to individual consumers. Prices are good and I think if you buy over $100 worth, they will even throw in free delivery. Don't quote me on the delivery since it's been a while since we bought enough fish from there to qualify for free delivery.
I think they might get it from sisco. I knew a chick that used to work there and she said she could get huge amounts of salmon or oysters or steaks for $20. I'm not sure if they supplied the sushi palces though.
They get it from city fish... already discussed... I used to work for the company who shipped everything in for cityfish every night. Its flown in fresh every 24 hours.
