Default Heading cross country...

Hey gang,

I am packing up and moving cross country to Ottawa - planning on driving there in June solo.

I am hoping to cram in the drive into 3-3.5 days.

Anyone have any advice on the drive/things I should be prepared for/places to stay the night?

Thanks in advance!

I've heard that going through the states is best also. Better highways, cheaper gas and you can get some duty free at the end!

Kenora is always a nice place to stop if you're going via Canada.

Plus starting June 1, duty free exemption for a stay of at least 48 hours increases to $800, so you can get some good shopping done.

Just drove from Calgary to Halifax last August.
We drove down to Estevan, and dropped into the states around there.
Continued on through Fargo, Minneapolis, Chicago, around Detroit, back into Canada at Sarnia and up through GTA.
Took us 4 days from Calgary to Montreal, so I would think you could probably do it in 3.5.

Did this as a kid every summer.

Usual route was enter US via Estevan. Down to Minot. Continue across through Grand Forks, Bemidji, Duluth, then back into Canada via Sault St Marie. Continue on to Ottawa.

With a truck and Camper it was done in 3.5 days. Can be done in under 3 days if you are hardcore.

I was wondering if it would be better to go thru cleveland and then to sYracuse or along the lake and come back into canada at Collins landing and then get on the 401.

At 3.5 days that is not going to leave a lot of time to sightsee

Thanks everyone!

This is probably the exact route I am thinking of taking.

I wish I could take the time to enjoy the country, but I am coming back from a Europe trip and then need to get to Ottawa/so I can't afford to be too leisurely..

I am giving myself a 4th day if I need it, however.

I just need to think of ways to amuse myself for ~39 hours (does that sound about right?) of driving...

Through the US, but I disagree with the Saskatchewan route. While it is shorter distance wise, I think you save more money going through Montana since gas is a touch cheaper.

I've made it with 2 overnight stops before. Cross at Coutts, AB/Sweetgrass, MT, take US-2 to Glendive, then across the I-94 all the way to Detroit/Windsor, then 401 it up to the 416.

This. It's not even remotely fun to fly over. Most boring part of a flight is when you ate between Drumheller and pretty much everything east of it. I can't imagine the drive. Get some podcasts and audio books queued up.
