What do you think? What if your boss called you in and said...you know <fill in the name blank> our moral police saw you and RougeUnderoos getting Pie faced last night. Sorry we cant accept this behaviour...You are Fired!
Off duty monitoring...
Employees are being disciplined or fired for such behaviors as drinking on their own time, using competitors' products and displaying political bumper stickers.

I had a summer job years ago for one of those promotional companies. I was part of the Spring Long Distance crew that harassed people in the mall. Horrible job.
But, more to the point, one of the organization's big clients was Pepsi (they did the Pepsi Challenge stuff) so we were not to be caught anywhere (on duty or off) consuming Coke. Weird.

I had a friend who worked at Wal-Mart. She told me that they did something similar. For example, you weren't supposed to be in the drinking establishment with more than 10 other Wal-Mart employees. She also said that when she was interviewed, they asked her questions about sexual practices and drug use.
I guess that is sort of monitoring an employees private life.

Well I've said it before in other threads but it bears repeating. I work for one of the two major breweries in Canada and although it isn't a written agreement, it is well known that we only consume our products when in the public eye. I honestly don't see the big deal.

I play ball with a couple of guys that work at Safeway. At one game he pulled out a snack (trail mix I think) that had the Kirkland (Costco) brand all over it. I started to give him a hard time about it, when he replied, "I can't afford to shop at Safeway, I work at a grocery store!"
I know grocers had fired people for "betrayal" in the past, but help is so hard to find right now, I don't think they would dare try it now.

I could understand if it is known or easily known that you work for a large company and are seen using the competitors products. Why would people want to buy stuff from you if you won't use it yourself.
However, not being allowed to go out and get plastered?? Unless you are somehow using the company name or wearing a company uniform I don't see a problem here.

Ha ha. Funny thing is I did get the gears from a boss once for coming into work stinking like booze.
"I don't care what you do on your own time, but I just can't have you coming in here smelling like a brewery" he said.
Fair enough I guess, considering it was a school and I was the teacher.
This Orwell approach though is a load of crap. I can't put a bumper sticker on my car? If some jackass told me that I'd tell him to cram it with walnuts. It's a job, not a life.

Well I feel it is a small price to pay for the freedoms we enjoy. If people are living just and honourable lives then they should not be worried.

Please tell me this is sarcasm.
Being fired for having a political bumper sticker your boss doesn't like should be cause for dismissal?

They asked her questions about her sexual practices? I'm pretty sure they are not legally allowed to ask those types of questions in an interview.

As far as the consumption of a product produced by a competitor to your employer I totally agree. You gotta dance with the one that brung ya.

closest thing I've had to that was boss drops me off at the bar after work, and first thing in the morning when I walked he he stormed up in my face and said "SPEAK... NOW!!!"
I said "what? you think I'm drunk? hungover? I'm a Cape Bretoner man, let's get this store open"
he took a big sniff in, and said "AAaaaallllllllllrrrrriiiigggghhhttttt, you can go"
mind you the whole thing was him being funny, but I didn't dare tell him I was going on a pubcrawl that night, and returning to work for 8am the next morning as well... hehehe
