So I finally tried out Halo this weekend. I'd like to know everbodies opinions of it.
Mine? Well I honestly cannot figure out why it is so popular. It was rather boring, there was nothing special about it at all. The game did nothing to hold my interest. I'd rather play Unreal, and I don't like Unreal. Quake is a much better game than Halo is.
How did Halo get to be so popular?

Are you talking about Halo on the Xbox or PC?
Halo (the Xbox version, at least) did a few things very, very well.
1. Co-op gameplay. I can't express how fun it is to play through the game with a buddy. It irritates me to no end that more games don't have a co-op mode.
2. Weapon switching. I liked that you could only carry two weapons at any one time, and I *really* liked that you could throw a grenade or perform a melee attack without having to switch your weapon.
3. Intelligent enemies. Play the game on Normal then try it agian on Legendary. The aliens are noticably smarter, using cover and teamwork much better.
Also keep in mind that the game is nearly four years old now, so other games have borrowed some of the things that made Halo great.
And you can't really be serious about Quake being better, can you? As a multiplayer deathmatch game, sure, but the singleplayer (and especially co-op) of Halo is infinitely better than Quake. IMO it rivals Half-Life in that respect.

Yeah, I tried it when it first came out for PC and it wasnt anything special to me. Maybe if I was a multiplayer like my buddy I would have liked it more but I'm not.

Finally, someone starts speaking the truth, I've tried halo before and can't figure out why its so popular. My roommate has an xbox and I could only stand to play it for about 30 minutes until I got bored. I guess the xbox just numbed its users with crappy games so that when a medeocre one comes out, it all of a sudden becomes game of the century

I am absolutely convinced this game is 100% hype. I've always bought into it, enjoyed it the first couple of weeks but when I look back on my gameplay experience... I don't see anything special.
The multi player doesn't even touch Counter-Strike, and the gameplay doesn't touch Half-Life.
Halo in all regards get's a big MEH from me.

Owned an X-Box for a long time and never bought it. My nephew rented it but I just wasn't into it. Of course FPS's aren't my favourite type of game anyway.

I'll jump on the bandwagon here as well as say I didn't get it either. I borrowed both 1 & 2 from a friend who said they were the greatest games he'd ever played... hmmmm.... I guess.....
Give me Project Gotham Racing or Baulder's Gate or GTA or Splinter Cell or Fable or NHL 2005 or anything else first.
I actually find there's very few 'first person' games I can get into. I always feel like I have tunnel vision or something. Third person gives me a way better perception of my surroundings. Even though I love the concept, I've found Marrowind hard to play for this reason as well.

If you can get some buddies and play live together from different houses its a ton of fun. The 1 player mode doesn't appeal to me, but the multiplayer is my favorite since goldeneye.

Phew. I thought I was worried I was going to be flamed by all for my comments on Halo. I am a Medal of Honor junkie and that is my FPS of choice.
Halo just doesn't leave me wanting more like Medal of Honor did, or Counterstrike or even games from other genres like the Gran Tourismo series, the first couple of Tomb Raider games or Sim City.
And yes I liked Quake better than Halo. I had more fun playing Quake than I did Halo therefore I like Quake better.

Halo is just like Napolean Dynamite: People either love it or hate it.
I just find the multiplayer to be fun, there's a large variety of ways you can kill people and it doesn't hurt that I own everyone.

I found the story and atmosphere pretty cool, and I did enjoy the game for the most part though I found it got boring and repetative the further I went.

MOHAA is my choice of FPS, but HALO2 was a great game, esp the co-op mode. Maybe some people aren't giving it a chance...
I think if you want-not-to-like something, chances are, you won't!

I never played it before so I thought I'd give it a chance to see what the game is all about. I didn't want to hate it I just found that I didn't think it was all that special and I am really confused as to why the hype is so big.
For me, the fun factor of playing Halo just isn't there. It didn't do anything to warrant me buying an xbox or the pc version of the game.

I traded in my copy of Halo 2.. Ghost Recon 2 online is 100 times better than Halo 2 online. I tried halo online one time and it sucked.

Not really fair to compare Halo to PC shooters. The good thing about Halo is that is a console shooter with great controlls and gameplay. Almost any die hard shooter fans will likely pick their PC games first, but as far as console shooters go, Halo is one of the best, especially if you don't like army games.

I guess I'm in the minority here but I enjoyed both Halo 1 and 2. Sure they were WAAY over hyped but were both pretty good games for the XBOX. (I tried Halo on the PC and didn't enjoy it half as much on that platform.) That said, you really cannot compare the game to the likes of Half Life 2 or Call of Duty on the PC. They are the definitive FPS's imo.

While I did use the comparision to some other FPS games (I did mention other game genres too though), I didn't find Halo to be fun or interesting enough to hold my attention.

I enjoyed halo 1 and 2 single and multiplayer. The online halo 2 is some of the funnest ive played. Playing with friends makes it that much better.
