Default Karri Ramo - so far so good

Here are the other 29 teams starters' EV SV%

http://www.nhl.com/ice/playerstats.h...ecialTeamSaves

1. MIN - Harding .969
2. COL - Varlamov .959
3. MTL - Price .958
4. BOS - Rask .958
5. DAL - Lehtonen .953
6. CHI - Crawford .951
7. ANA - Hiller .950
8. STL - Halak .946
9. OTT - Anderson .945
10. SJ - Niemi .942
11. TOR - Bernier .942
12. PIT - Fleury .933
13. CBJ - Bobrovsky .932
14. TB - Bishop .932
15. CAR - Ward .928
16. BUF - Miller .925
17. PHX - Smith .925
18. DET - Howard .925
19. LA - Quick .924
20. PHI - Mason .922
21. NYI - Nabakov .921
22. NSH - Rinne .921
23. WPG - Pavelec .915
24. WSH - Holtby .915
25. NJ - Schneider .914
26. FLA - Thomas .913
27. VCR - Luongo .912
28. NYR - Lundqvist .887
29. EDM - Dubnyk .876

Ramo is .948 which is good for 8th on that list

MacDonald is .892 which is 28th

So far Ramo is doing great by this measure.

Unfortunately he has given up 6 power play goals which has skewed his overall save percentage significantly. In my mind, this is a team penalty killing issue and I expect that over the next several games that Ramo will have a much better save percentage overall.

...otherwise we could start Ramo every game and put in MacDonald whenever a penalty is called... nevermind

That would be very entertaining to watch.

Ramo got the Fireman's hat last night. He got it from MacDonald and says he's going to pass it back to him tonight. They intend to keep it back and forth amongst the goalies.

Goalie stats 7 games into a season...are goalie stats 7 games into a season.
I like Ramo and I think he has done good enough. Just dont think 8th in the league means anything after 3 games. Hope he can take the starting job and be the new Finn in town but he still has a whole lot of work ahead of him and I'd rather not look into his numbers.

I like his sense of humor... very understated. Hope he's a keeper (pun intended).

Even strength Save percentage? I can skew any stat to make it look good. Ramo hasn't looked that good to me. Mcdonald is the better goalie right now. Not sure if there is #1 potential for either yet.

On the bright side, there has been great surprises on forward and Calgary is getting good success.

Any goalie who goes down on his knees for every shot, stays back in the net, stays in one spot after the first shot and slow to get back to the second shot doesn't give a team a lot more winning chances than a goalie like Joey MacDonald. I agree that Ramo makes good saves with one-on-one for the past couple of games, but you have to question his mobility in net when there is more than one shot or deflected shots going towards the net. For the most part in the LA game, the backchecking and the defensive plays in front of him was superb.

Like Giguere, Ramo is a big goalie and he should use his size to his advantage. Giguere was also criticized for his butterfly style and not being a real athletic goalie (like Kipper), but he covered the net well and was quick when he had to be. On the other hand, Ramo goes down a lot, but doesn't cover the upper part of the net well and isn't quick laterally either. This is why I have so much criticism over Ramo than MacDonald.

I'm confused according to nhl.com Ramo is at .893 not .948 ohhh even strenght save percentage because apparently power plays and short handed situations don't count...

why did we ever let go of McElhinney and his stellar 1.000 even strength save percentage.

That's even strength shot save percentage...in 3 games. So it means next to nothing, just that the Flames have really sucked on the PK.

Giguere is 6'1, Rämö is 6'0. Neither are big for goalies. You could even say Karri is small by today's standards.

Sigh...

RE: 3 game sample size

True. It is a "so far so good" thread. It is not "Hand Ramo the Vezina" thread. So far Ramo's EV SV% is very good. So far, he has stopped 73 out of 77 shots in three games at even strength against WSH, SJ and LA (on the road).
RE: EV SV%

Odd man situations (both PP and PK) create more scoring chances in a handful of shots, so you might want to isolate that.

All three of those teams have pretty good power play %, and they scored 6 goals on Ramo. Also Calgary's PK needs a lot of work.

If you don't get the stat, don't worry. I won't bring it up in front of you.

Can't wait to see the threads after his 6th start. Will the talk center on the Vezina or if he's ahead of Kipper as the Flames all time best?

Nice. Shall we go back to read 30 page thread commentary on the intra-squad scrimmages at development camp? Or is it ok to have a thread on Ramo's first 3 games?

The stats don't mean much; for me, he passes the eye test. Doesn't seem overwhelmed out there; doesn't appear to get rattled; looks solid on the easy saves, can make a big save when he needs to; hasn't given up the bad goal at the bad time.

Yes, he's not as quick laterally as Kipper, but we've been spoiled for so many years watching #34 play. His puckhandling could use some improvement, and he's a little too "scrambly" on the second and third shots, but as long as he's stopping rubber and isn't giving out giant rebounds into the slot, I'll be happy.
