Office furniture has pretty much become disposable in the last 10 or so years. You can buy a fairly decent chair brand new at Source for about $200.00, you can get a cheap one for $99.00. A really good quality chair that will last 20 years will cost you $400 or more, you probably don't need that for home use.
Another thing you can do is look for a used high quality chair. You can find them on kijiji, at auctions, etc. Sometimes you can find a chair that was $500 new, is 10 years old, and is selling for $50.00. I have a Steelcase chair at home from the late 70's that is still in better shape than most 1 year old chairs.
Good names are Steelcase, Herman Miller, Knoll, Kamor + many others. If you are going to buy a used chair look for a metal base, 5 wheels (the really old ones had 4), a solid metal plate mounting the base to the chair pan and a durable easy to clean fabric. A good quality chair just feels more solid.
