GRINDELWALD, Switzerland - Canadian racer Nick Zoricic died from head injuries after crashing heavily in a World Cup skicross event Saturday, the International Ski Federation said.
The Toronto skier died at 12.35 p.m. Swiss time as a result of "severe neurotrauma," the federation said in a statement.
The 29-year-old Zoricic crashed directly into safety nets lining the side of the course after going wide over the final jump.
Television pictures showed Zoricic tumbling through the nets as his skis and poles were thrown clear.
"Nick Zoricic fell heavily just before the finish in the round of eight, crashing directly into the safety netting and thereafter lying motionless," FIS said.
"The medical care from team doctors and Air Glacier followed immediately. Despite reanimation, Zoricic died at 12.35 as a result of severe neurotrauma.
"The organizing committee, FIS and Swiss Ski express their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Nick Zoricic and the Canadian Ski Team," the statement said.
Organizers abandoned Saturday's World Cup events and then scheduled World Cup Finals races at the same venue Sunday.

They do? The angle of the video makes that virtually impossible to determine, but they don't look any different than anything I've ever seen.
Looks like he hit the jump just slightly off line, and at those speeds that small difference can have terrible results. It's crazy how we've seen so many crashes that look so much worse and have people walk away from, or at least survive.

I know! Especially in the downhill, those crashes look much more serious.

Perhaps "has to be a factor" would be better expressed as "could have been a factor" and is likely to be something that would form part of the investigation on how this could have happened. It does appear to me that the blue lines under the jump are out of whack - it is more difficult from the angle to draw a definitive conclusion on those above.
That said, it doesn't take much skier error at that intensity to go off course.
You're right about how we see things that appear far worse, where the impact of a fall seems far more extreme leading, to absolutely no ill-effect.

He suffered a broken neck....which was exactly what i thought when i saw the footage...when he comes to a rest, his head simply looks detached from the spine.
It is very sad. He seemed like a really great guy. The accident didn't look too brutal, but it just goes to show you how dangerous of a sport it can be.
The article I read said that he was "reanimated" temporarily after the accident. Must have been a translation issue because that language makes it sound so ghoulish.

And I still remember how the Canadian coach was already blaming the dead guy a few hours later and calling him out for essentially being a tourist athlete - made me cringe.
