Default Bought the wrong item on Ebay...

An auction just ended today where my buddy was the winner of an item.
His winning bid was $5,100.
Problem is, he bought the wrong item.

What options does he have, if any, or is he hooped?

talk to the seller and let him know about the mistake, and suggest if he ants to relist the item, he'll pay for the relisting fee...

I had that happen to me with a mustang from the states, i got quotes for shipping before and once i won the shipper doubled his rates saying " now that you have the car "

I just explained it to the seller, no issues, paid $100.00 for relisting and i was in the clear

He's committed. If the seller won't agree to void the sale, best bet is to just relist the item and try to recoup as much as he can.

I wouldn't have paid the listing fee for that. If he quoted you one price and then expects another, you have no zero obligation to purchase at the higher price.

I think in that case the shipper was someone other than the seller.

Yes, he should communicate with the seller. The seller will likely be mad, but not as mad as if your buddy just stopped communicating all together.

Could the seller take your buddy to court and sue him? Yes. However that is unlikely.

Seller has multiple avenues that he can do.
One, second chance for the 2nd highest bidder. Secondly, he can file a Non Payment dispute, which I think gets his listing and fees refunded by ebay, and a mark against the buyers record (I think multiple marks can get you banned?). Doubt most sellers would go through with any legal means.

You can terminate the transaction with neither paying any fees and the seller can re-list. Or the seller can make a second chance offer to the 2nd bidder.

Who cares. The seller should have done his job and given you the correct quote.

When I sold on eBay I probably had about 20 buyers change their mind after the auction. Not once did I have a 2nd chance buyer actually buy.

Often people get caught up in the bidding, and you lose that with the 2nd chance offer. I throw this out there because I had buyers who backed out say "just offer it to the 2nd highest bidder"- thinking that I would only be out the $5 between the 2 bids. Nope- it would often mean re-listing; which also shows other buyers that somebody either backed out, or that you have multiples of this item so there is less urgency.

I bought some ram on ebay and realized that I may not be able to use it. I messaged the guy right after I had bought it and he gave me my money back right away. No hesitations whatsoever.

I believe the poster only bought the car on the basis that the shipping fee he got from a third-party (nothing to do with the seller) was going to be x, when it turned out to be x + y, the purchase of the car wasn't worth it.

I am not sure what the recourse for the OP would be. He could pay the difference between what he bid and what the second highest bidder put in. That would seem fair.

Yup our work ebay account has had given at least as many second chance offers and we have yet to see someone purchase it as a 2nd chance buyer.

Seems odd he'd bid up to $5000 on the wrong item. As a seller, it annoys the crap out of me when people back out of the auctions. Most times they don't even reply to your messages so that infuriates me even more. The offering of paying listing fee's would be a kind gesture and would likely make me happier.

FWIW, people just generally ignore you, or the odd time they do talk to you, its a short message about them losing their job or some other lame BS excuse.

Congrats to him, out of all the people in the world, he was the one who wanted to pay the most for it.

haha when Ebay just started i was showing my friend how easy it was to bid and buy stuff.

So we were looking at this Tron arcade machine in Houston. The price was good but the shipping to Canada was like $1500! and my idiot friend hit place bid.....

I got outbid by $2 in the final minute of the auction. haha

When my cousins came over for a visit about 7 years ago we went on the family computer and my cousin was looking at an electronic drum kit on eBay. Of course, my dad's account was still logged in. But he didn't know that and ended up placing a bid on a $1500 electronic drum kit. My dad found out about three hours later and gave me and my cousins some heck. We watched nervously as the clock winded down while we were still the highest bidder before somebody outbid us with 2 minutes to go. Biggest relief ever.

^Prime example of why you don't let 9 year olds on the family computer unsupervised.
