xbox vs ps3
i am sure this is a subject a few years old but my son has saved up enough money to buy a console now and we have agreed to let him.
what is the consensus better console? he wont be playing games like Call of Duty (at least not until his mother changes her mind )
i think the P3S does streaming and xbox doesnt, right? anything else set them apart?

PS3 is free to play online, with Xbox you have to purchase the "live" to play online usually 60 dollars for the year. That said I have an Xbox because I can't stand PS3 controllers. Don't think that would matter for your son though. Both do streaming and both are capable of Netflix. PS3 does play Blu Ray movies as well whereas the Xbox doesn't. The better bang for your buck is the PS3

Here are the various platform exclusive games: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...th_generation)
Those would be the biggest determining factor for me. You don't want to buy one system only to find out that the games you want to play aren't available for that system.

Both systems have pros and cons. As get bak mentioned, It really should come down to which games you want exclusive wise. Both systems have some excellent exclusives.

Just echoing here for the most part. For me the biggest factor was the free online subscription. Followed closely by the blu-ray (at the time I bought it blu-ray players were substantially more than they are now. Third factor was the controller. I hated the xbox controllers (which I have since gotten used to, but still prefer the PS3)

In that case the PS3 has Little Big Planet (1 and 2) which would probably be appealing. I'm not sure what xbox has for exclusive titles for that age group. The sports games like fifa won't be console exclusive.
Also, the Xbox (with 4gb memory, not the 250gb) is on for $129 this week at most places.

I have both, and the Xbox gets a lot more playing time than the PS3. I usually only turn the PS3 on the watch movies, and play God Of War once in a blue moon.

You're going to find more exclusive, pre-teen/teen friendly content on PS3. Xbox's big exclusives are all M-rated titles, while many PS3 games are good for the whole family. Titles like Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, Sly Cooper and LittleBigPlanet. And if you're okay with a little bit of violence/swearing, the Uncharted and Infamous series are fantastic games that carry T-ratings. If you let your son watch a fairly tame 14A action movie, you wouldn't have any problems with him playing those games.

i rarely play the ps3, ps3 is really just my netflix system and blu ray player (in hind sight i probably don't need the ps3)
always buy the games for xbox when available on both.. only didn't once just to have a game for the ps3, but have not played a single game on my ps3 since november or even later, rarely turn it on.
on the few times i've done multiplayer on ps3, i definitely prefer the xbox multiplayer as well despite the 56 dollars a year.
main reason is the controller for that, so go to best buy or futureshop and let him play their systems if they have any and let him hold the controller, that'll be the best way to decide.

I have both, and my 360 receives the most play time by a long shot. Not sure why. I'm use to both controllers, I don't play online games (though, I've been playing global events in SSX for the last two weeks,) and whenever a game isn't an exclusive, I usually pick it up for the 360.
However, I prefer the PS3's Netflix layout.
How's that for helpful?

PS3 Media Server is another factor. You download and install it on your PC, then as long as your PS3 is running off the same router you can access all of your media files on it. It streams everything well except 1080 HD.

the argument has been on going since the release of the systems as to which controller is 'better'. in a design standpoint, the PS3 controller is a 'better' layout and design.
PS3 controller is symmetrical. thumbs are in a 'neutral' position on when placed on the analog sticks.
the Xbox controller is not symmetrical. your thumbs are not in a 'neutral' position when they are on the analog sticks.
your body (hands) will get used to whatever you chose. like driving your car versus a rental. better yet, like sitting on your toilet versus the one at work...although that could be 'your toilet', too.

But you are operating under the assumption that all games use both joysticks simultaneously. Lots of games use left joystick and right buttons, in which case the PS3 controller is the one not symmetrical.
Also, I find that your entire premise of neutral position of thumbs is bunk. I hate the PS3 controller because the joystick is way too low on the controller. My neutral thumb position fits the left joystick on the xbox controller much better.
I also much prefer the xbox trigger as opposed to the dual shoulder buttons on the PS3 controller.
As for the OP, also consider if your kid will be playing online. I'm sure lotsa people have both but you may want to buy the console that his friends use. Personally, I don't know anyone that games primarily on a PS3 so for online purposes it is xbox and only xbox.

thanks for all the help.
we are going to get the xbox that is on sale. i know its only 4mb, but it will last him the 2 years or so until a new platform comes out and his friends have it.
the boy doesnt want to spend extra on PS3 and it doesnt seem any legit reason to justify otherwise.
