Martin promised a full and fair debate on the marriage bill and has not delivered spurring O'Brien to leave the party.

Good.

This is not a blow at all to the Liberals. O'Brien claims he has no interest in voting against the government on a confidence motion, and he'll likely be replaced in the Liberal causcus by someone more socially liberal.

I'm not sure what O'Brien is trying to accomplish here...he won't be re-elected as an independent, so unless he's planning to cross the floor and run as a Conservative in the next election, he's pretty much put an end to his political career.

is it though. They just got on elected in a by election not long ago.

Just seems to even that out is all..

Martin breaking another promise. Terribly surprising.

That said, I agree somewhat with MarchHare. O'Brien's move is meaningless grandstanding. If he wanted to kill the same sex marriage bill, he should have voted against the budget. If the government is defeated, the bill dies. If the conservatives in the next election, nothing happens until the next time the Liberals gain power.

He's making a statement, certantly, but this statement will not change the balance of power in the HoC.
