Titanic director James Cameron has reached the deepest part of the Pacific Ocean in his solo submarine, mission partner the National Geographic says.
The explorer and film maker reached a depth of 10,898 metres at 7:52am on Monday, local time, in the Mariana Trench in his specially designed submersible, according to mission partner National Geographic.
Cameron's first words on reaching the bottom of the so-called Challenger Deep were "All systems OK", according to a mission statement.

He then tweeted: "Just arrived at the ocean's deepest pt. Hitting bottom never felt so good. Can't wait to share what I'm seeing w/ you."
This is a huge day! I am very excited for this! I can't wait for the video. Filmed it all in 3d for a documentary.
only the 3rd person to even make it there, and only the first one to actually get to see and look around as the one in the 60s kicked up to much silt to see anything at the bottom.
More men have walked on the moon. This puts Cameron in a very select group of explorers.
Well done

i dont know if Cameron is a self indulgent pompous ass as one might expect from someone of his stature and profession, however this is truly ground breaking work.
good for him, this is like going to the moon but with 2012 technology in hand!
this has to make James Cameron a historical figure for something much more concrete than making a blockbuster movie. Who was the last true explorer going somewhere mankind had never seen before?
even exploring remote parts of Africa or the Amazon isnt true exploration like this, as surely tribes people at some point in history had seen those lands. no one has ever been to this part of the earth and certainly not with the technology and recording equipment to bring at all back.
