Default How many wins would you trade a 1st round pick for?

After trading for Henrik and going on a nice little winning streak, I got to thinking about that question.

Sure, there are a thousand variables that go into making a winning team, but if you could, theoretically, trade a first round pick for a guaranteed number of wins in the season, how many would you need?

Assume an unknown pick in the top 10
Assume you are an average team that would be fighting for the 7/8 spot without the trade. 10 extra wins? 15?

I'm not sure yet, but this gives me something to think about while I wait for my 10:30pm ultimate frisbee game to start.

I dont think youll get that answer.
I think most GMs in this league, Flames and a few others excepted, place a very high value on these picks. I play the game more like a Monopoly game and use whatever is at my disposal to win all the time, every year.
Others like to wait 3-5 years patiently building with young players and drafting.

I love the draft and it's not the same without a first - if I have more than one first I would be more likely to move on.

But you also have to have faith that the move would have an impact - and based on my team's performance this year I don't have that confidence.

Interesting question but to me the concept to trading a top 10 pick (or any asset for that matter) for an artificually inflated win count doesn't make any sense unless the wins you are purchasing also come with an impact player (not sure if that is what you meant or not). Sure, the wins might get you into the playoffs but I'm sure your teams talent level (which is below your win count) would catch up with you there when playing teams that actually qualified for the playoffs based on talent level.

If I was a bubble team I would not move a top 10 pick to make the playoffs...be that 10 wins, 15 wins etc...

If I was a top 3-4 team and really thought I had a chance at winning the entire thing then I would consider moving a top 10 pick but it would need to be for an asset that improved me further then just the current season/push, not for straight wins.

In the 7/8 spot I would gamble and give up 5 wins for a top 10 1st.

Draft picks are a waist of time. I just assumed they were added to our roster page each season to make for a nice bargaining chip while ripping off fellow gm's?

I gave it some thought myself and I think I'm in the same camp as Rob. If I could move up from the 3/4 seed to the #1 seed by trading a #1, I'd probably do it. Not sure if I'd do it to move up from the 7/8 spot to a 4/5 spot though.

If I think I had a shot at pulling off an upset in the first round, I'd probably trade the first to sneak into the playoffs, but if I was going to be up against a powerhouse team in the first round (Like NYI) I'd probably say forget it and build for next year.

An interesting thought experiement from my perspective anyway.
