Its been 21 years might as well let them try and get financing. Seems like town site is going to be on a old mining camp. I like it more skiing the better!

My family has had a place at Panorama since 1989, very curious to watch this unfold. I quite like the idea of skiing at Jumbo and playing a round at GreyWolf on the same day!

Realistically though, I think this thing will still end up in the courts and looking for financing for another 20 years.

I'm in favour, but skeptical that it'll get actually get built before I'm in a home.

The trouble is that there's not such thing as a ski industry - only a real estate industry next to ski hills (unless you're very close to a big city). I question their ability to sell condos in such a remote location. But, who knows.

Bunk articulated what I was thinking much better than I could have. With the proximity of Panorama (and its ample real estate, to say nothing of the rest of the Invermere area) it could be very difficult to sell condos/homes another 30km up the road.

For those interested here is the Jumbo Resort website with lots of information on the project:

Not if people would rather bring skis to the hill instead of skates

I love the area, and Panorama is a great year round destination, but I don't think it's going to attract many destination skiers, just destination get drunk in a wicked hot tub below an ice hill people (which I happen to love... the snow's no good? Oh well, wicked village below).

I was asking a guy who has worked on roads for a long time and he didn't believe this would ever be build. The road to Panorama is apparently a challenge to keep safe in the winter and adding an additional 30K to it would be a major task when it comes to construction, maintenance and liability issues.

I've never driven that road in winter but he seemed to know what he was talking about; he gets contracted to look at this stuff all over western Canada.

securing financing should not be too much of an issue....

i guess i hate the idea of pristine wilderness being changed forever, but i am not much of a skier and i don't get out to panorama much.

as mentioned above the road to panorama is already tricky enough to drive - i could not imagine that drive being another 30k.....

Still better than Nakiska. This year has been ok but the 2010/2011 season had some excellent snow on the mountain.

Greaaatt. Now we'll have even more jackholes doing 140 in their SUVs up highway 93 so they can get to their place in Jumbo to pound back 10 beers before they go to bed on Friday night. Can't wait!

That road to Panorama is going to need some serious work to support the additional traffic load I imagine this will bring. That road is nuts on a long weekend, I can't imagine how it'll be with this extra volume on it.

It'll be interesting to see how quickly this will proceed. Thankful we have a place on the lake and not up in the mountains.

Edit: Also, with Panorama and Fairmont nearby, how many ski/resort dollars are they going to be able to bring in over the long term? I look at the Condo unit on the other side of Copper Point that has had a hard time selling units and wonder are people going to want to drive another 45 minutes to their condo at Jumbo?

No kidding, love when they go for the "10 car pass" on some of the straight-aways (winter or summer).

I just set the cruise at 95 in the park and try and find a spot between two clumps of traffic.

Absolutely, and I didn't mean to demean the place. I really want to get out there this summer for some biking! I've stayed there in the summer a couple times and it's fantastic, so nice and quiet.

I think they are really banking on just how unique this terrain is (and the summer skiing/boarding portion). When you look at pics of the site you have to admit it would be absolutely awesome to have easy access to that terrain.

I just think a lot of people would opt to buy the much more affordable real estate in the valley or Panorama area before shelling out the price at a brand new unproven location. I could see this project being really good for Panorama real estate (and there are some real bargains on condos there right now) since they are right in the middle between Jumbo and Invermere and already have a nice village established (plus the summer activities).

Yeah, the scenery is amazing up there. Lots of fond memories of hiking up in the Jumbo area. Definitely more appealing than on the side of a road, for sure.

This has to be true, as it confirms a lot of what I have seen driving the 93 for the last 14 years or so going to/from Panorama.

Had to chuckle at this comment after the article. He's got some good points.

Except he's wrong, it WILL kill all the grizzlys OMG!!!@22231111

I've been up into the area, which has been used by mining companies, forest companies, helicopters, and a myriad of off-road trucks, and noisy sledheads. Exactly how will a contained ski area village be more obnoxious than those users?

Can there not be one single resort that is up high on a glacier in Canada (Blackcomb's doesn't count)? It is actually going to kill all the grizzlies? I don't think so. Lake Louise supports one of the higher populations of reproductive female bears in the Rocky Mountains. Trains kill the grizzlies - not the ski area!

Aside from the fact that the Jumbo proposal took 25 years to get this far, don't try to do business in BC. If "greenies" don't get you, First Nations will. And if you get that far, the BC government will finish you off with taxes.

Is it better to have a gondola to the top of every mountain, like they do in Europe?
