First of all apologies for what will be for many a very dull thread but here goes and any help at all will be hugely appreciated.

I've recently been mulling it over and i really fancy a new start somewhere, if even just for a year or so. For several reasons Canada appeals and for one reason in particular Calgary! So with that in mind is there any help or advice you can offer me? I've read a fair bit about it and know about the points system etc but what i really need is help with emlpoyment. So if you know someone that could help or you can point me in the right general direction of companies to apply for etc i would be hugely indebted to you.

Im a 23 year old male, good health etc. I have a BSc in Media Technology and i currently work as a manager for a very big UK Retail company.

Again i apologise for the nature of the thread but i need you help Calgarians!

Well I've hired people in the past from over-seas. It can be a monumental pain in the arse as you have to essentially prove that the person you are hiring cannot be hired in Canada. That they have some sort of unique skill that your business needs. Best method I found was to get a letter from what ever relevent local college (in my case the ACAD) that stated that the candidate did have unique skills. I also made the case that hiring people from overseas had benefits in that they brought different life experiences and perspective. Of course all this just helps once a company wants to hire you.

Fotze's suggestion of Critical Mass is a good one but I suggest going through their web site (www.criticalmass.com) which will direct you how to apply.

Don't you get major major points if you can speak French? I remember hearing that somewhere, and that was why it was so easy for Somalians to get citizenship. Not sure if that's true or not?

Is Canada that hard to get into? Wierd. I remember when I was around 21 I had a "Work Holiday" visa that anyone in the Commonwealth could get. I knew a few guys that did that visa first (it lasts a year) then after running it out found a firm that would "sponsor" their citizenship. I have a couple buddies in Australia that did it, and I think it's the same sort of system here.

Or you can just say screw the points system and enter the country illegally via a boat, then claim refugee status, our government being the goodwill chaps that they are will never have the heart to kick you out! Don't forget to volunteer for Berlinda's campaign at the next election too! That's how the pizza boy stayed in the country: by delivering pizzas to the last HR minister's campaign!

Some interesting points!

Not sure i could claim refugee status from Scotland but its worth a try.

As for French i can speak conversational French so i get some points for that.

Those work visa's still exist but Canada has used up its quota already and cant take more til February.

All hints, tips and stories are very welcome and much appreciated.

About 95% or more of refugee claims get rejected, so I don't think you would have a good shot, what being from the UK and all. You would have prove to customs and immigration authorities that you were persecuted in the UK and seek asylum. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say this won't work.

Yeah i have to agree with you there. Although one of my neighbours does do DIY at ridiculous times in the morning at weekends, think that would help?

This might help:

http://www.alberta-canada.com/uk/immigrate.html

You should alos check out the oilsands project. They're hiring like mad and have special exemption from the Feds to bring in workers - don;t know the details though.
