Federal Government rejects Calgary for funding
It always pays off to have the local fire-power in the Federal Government doesn't it?
Today the Federal Government rejected (through a 3 line letter) between $82m and $100m for 4 major recreation centres in NW and SE Calgary. This despite the federal governments own crown corporation, P3 Canada, approaching the City to go with a P3 model, spending 2 years, countless staff time, and $3.1m of City money going down this path at their request. P3 Canada unanimously approved Calgary's application from a $1.8b pool of funds. The rejection comes from the political level the the Government of Canada. The City has already come to the table with 3/4 of the funding thanks to the new Community Investment Fund.
Of course this comes a week after they funded $122m for a museum in Edmonton that everyone wanted to go back to the drawing board. It's also worth remembering that Calgary sends $10 billion per year more in taxes to Ottawa than we get back on transfers and services. This is 1% of that imbalance.

Yet another reason to hate Edmonton. As if it wasn't stacked against them enough already.

Yes to more ice. ^
The SE Rec Center has been stalled for 3+ years (for a number of reasons, from funding, location, function etc.) Its past the point of being ridiculous now.

Why would they bother? Not like they'll ever lose any seats from this city.

Emailed my MP Rempel as well...just a stupid and shortsighted decision. I dont live anywhere close to those proposed rec centres, but this city desperately needs more ice + facilities.

Boycott! Boycott!
I'd definitely be ok with no rec centres if I didn't have to pay income tax anymore...

It's likely Calgary, that works out to roughly $10,000 per person.

Will rec centers be the issue that tips the scales toward separatism?
I hope so
