'Utterly disgusting,' says Bob Barker
Barker said his knowledge of the Stampede is that it's "notorious for horses falling to their deaths."
"This Calgary Stampede is just an egregious example of inhumane treatment for animals. To give that prize away, I think, is utterly disgusting."
But Barker acknowledges that as executive producer he was able to maintain control of the long-running show, including refusing to give away furs or cars that had leather interiors.
This guy sure loves his animals...can't really fault him.

He also loves his much younger women and sexual harassment. So who cares about that old codger's opinion?
No matter how old and crazy he is I have a feeling we're going to look back at the rodeo in 20 years and be fascinated it was once allowed to take place.
I'm far from an animal lover, but the way animals are treated at the Stampede is disgusting.

I bet the animals prefer it to being spayed or neutered

I used to like horse racing and polo till I started going to the actual events and getting behind the scenes. I had no idea how many horses die in their quest to merely do what they're told.
The owners like to rationalize though-oh, my horse lives in an air conditioned barn. Yup, then he twists his ankle in a polo match and dies. Whoopee.

what about eating them?
do you eat meat?
these debates are always interesting to me and are usually filled with double standards and hypocracy.
Is Bob Barker is some kind of king of the moral compass?

I agree, the stampede is stupid and old fashioned. I'm sure all the rednecks who like Nickelback will get all offensive with Bob saying he is old and irrelevant then applaud Don Cherry for saying stupid as well.

I agree, the stampede is awesome and fun. I'm sure all the cool people who like hot girls in Stampede attire will get all offensive with Bob, saying he is old and irrelevant then applaud cowgirls, while crushing beers and stuffing back mini donuts.
fixed

I've seen how rodeo animals are treated and I've seen how slaughterhouse animals are treated. The rodeo is basically The Sheraton in comparison. At least your chances of getting out alive are better than 0% and people actually give a damn if you are injured. I stand by my opinion that if you eat meat you don't get to pick and choose when animal rights matter (and yes, I eat a ton of meat).

Don't be so quick to discard part of your province's history.
I'm sure with some adjustments, it could accomodate for people worried about animal cruelty and still retain its legacy.

Thats what they said 20 years ago....and it has never been more popular than it is now.

I don't buy that in the least.
If I recycle aluminum cans, paper and plastics, but for whatever reason don't recycle glass jars, I'm doing far more than the neighbour who recycles nothing and calls me a hypocrite for not recycling the jars.
I certainly think someone can be against the abuse of animals for entertainment, but also eat meat. Similarly someone else can be a vegetarian, but like going to the rodeo. We are all hypocrites against our own hard and fast rules.... but at the end of the day I can live with myself if I do more good than harm.
I'm with Bob on this one. But being a vegetarian who attempts to purchases no products made from animals (i.e. leather), that should't be a surprise.
