Internet Name
At risk of sounding like a total tech-noob (which I am), my internet name is something that is not very appropriate. My first roommate named it and it didnt/doesnt bother me but I figured I should change to something a little less vulgar. I can't figure out how to change it but I assume its something easy. Anyone help? I'm on a Mac if that makes a difference.

What the heck is an Internet Name? Sir MegaDownloader Dotcom Jr. of Pornlandia?
-edit I guess you mean your router's SSID. To change this, you have to find out the IP address of your router (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.0, 192.168.2.1, etc.) and login into it. You also have to know the username and password. If you are on a Mac, the IP address might start with 10.

It's not an internet name. It's the name of the wireless network in your house. It has nothing to do with the internet. Nobody on the internet can see it. It doesn't matter.

Sorry my WIRELESS name. I'm sure everyone knew what I meant. The people that live around me can see it and I'm not looking forward to the day someone comes up and tells me they had to tell their 5-year-old what a dick was because of my WIRELESS name.

My kids wanted me to rename our wireless to 'The Terminator' *eyeroll* so when they play x-box live, people can see this instead of whatever it was before, which I believe was something boring like our last name. In order to change it, I had to get a new router, but I am sure there is an easier method.

If you can't log into it because of a password, there's probably a "reset" pinhole switch somewhere on the router. Press it, and then log into the router and reset your password, WPA/WEP password, and SSID name.
My preferred name is "default". I always know it's mine since no one else is as unoriginal.

Uhhh what? If your kids are on Live, they are seen by the gamer tags - not your router name. And you seriously bought a new router to change the name?
The internet should have the same rules as a car, you need a license to use it.

People might be able to see the name, but unless you're the only wireless user around and everyone knows it, nobody will know it's your wireless network, anyway.

On your mac there should be an Airport Utility program that allows you to go in and modify all your wireless network settings. If you can't log in, then like billybob said, you'll need to use the manual reset procedure for your device, which is usually a pinhole switch.

I had to buy a new router anyway, like I said I am sure there are easier ways. Not sure what it is- not the gamer tag- but there was some reason the kids wanted the wireless to be called 'Terminator'- I will have to ask since I know nothing about their xbox or PS3.
No need to be rude. There are other uses for the internet aside from gaming devices.
