Well I work in Bow Valley Square and my work PC can't go to 90% of the internetz... why CP is open is beyond me and a fluke. Since BVS is listed as a wifi site it would certainly be handy and save my data plan for when needed...
I'm not a Shaw customer though... I certainly can see the use.

Are they planning on monetizing it somehow? I assume there will be fees associated with it once it officially launches? Or is it a product differentiator to get people to switch to Shaw for residential service?

Details can be found here:
http://shaw.ca/Internet/WiFi/
Only available to Shaw customers. Data used while on their wifi network counts against the data limit on your existing internet plan with them.

ALL ABOARD!
|
So you'll have to sign on with your shaw email/account to access it. That way they can make it an added fee down the road. Not that they shouldn't, as it's a great service. Though, if they do charge for it, your data limit should be increased.

even if it's a $10 monthly fee for access it would be worth it. you could drop your cell data plan down to the bare minimum or drop it entirely and save a lot more than that $10. quite a smart move by Shaw to try and take a bit out of the mobile market without actually getting into it

Not really.
I have a 6gb plan through rogers, and I have tested it one month, where all I did, was tether to my cell phone for 1 month, and turned of my router at home. I hit 4.7 GBs under heavy use. The only thing I did not do, was stream Netflix. I did use youtube like no ones business though.
I pay 30/month for the 6gb plan, I believe the regular 1 gb plan is $25. My total cell bill is $72, with unlimited voice/text.
I have heavily debated totally dropping internet, and relying on my cell/data plan, the only thing that stops me is the speed issue, and Apple TV.

You would be the exception not the rule. I think this is a great added feature to Shaw internet. I too have a 6 Gb plan and I will use wi-fi at any given opportunity just for speed alone.

Yep. At $10, I could cut enough off my cell plan to break even on cost, but get much better speeds downtown (or wherever). Plus I would not be so paranoid about using data for things like streaming (aka Netflix).

There is talk of allowing other telco companies to buy bandwidth on the system where their 3g data is overloaded.
Either way, I'll be streaming from my Plex server at home to my iPhone on the bus like a mother $%#@er once it starts up. That's the point PsnaP.

I doubt you would be streaming anything on the bus as you would go from zone to zone switching access points requiring relogging in.

No way they wouldn't allow access point hand offs.
That said, I doubt the 302 route would have universal coverage.

Read the information page on Shaw. It says you only have to authenticate once per device and everytime you're in the covered zone your device automatically authenticates.
If they're able to cover the entire city, then I would have no need for a data plan from my carrier and not having a data plan is significantly cheaper. Not to mention that the battery life on most devices will be better when using WiFi instead of 3G.

another benefit of this is battery usage. being locked on a wi-fi signal uses a lot less juice than 3G or 4G does, and way less than bouncing between the two

Please, god of the Internetz, let them blanket the Saddledome with this wonderful Wi-Fi goodness. Having reliable, fast speeds for Flames games would be worth the small cost increase down the road (if any) as opposed to the horrible 3G speeds when there.
