Default Blue Monday

Quote:
It's Blue Monday, an ill-reputed date that has been dubbed "the most depressing day of the year."

The theory stretches back to 2005 when psychologist Cliff Arnall was asked to figure out the most miserable day of the year.

Using an elaborate math formula, he came up with the third Monday in January – as if Mondays weren't demonized enough already.

Arnall reasoned that Blue Monday is the day when a slew of unpleasant variables such as drab weather, failing New Year's resolutions and Christmas bills collide, creating a veritable maelstrom of negativity.

"Motivational levels also tend to be quite low at this time of year," Arnall told CTV's Canada AM last Blue Monday.

"You've got something called the 'hibernation effect,' when people tend to be more lethargic, they eat more than they really need."
Is this the most depressing day or merely junk science?

I have no idea, but the thing that really depresses me about today is that not enough news agencies use it as an excuse to throw some New Order into their broadcast, come on, it's a gimme.

Although youtube is blocked at my work, I suspect you have the New Order version embedded. Great song, but a little too emo for the most depressing day of the year.

Check out Orgy's cover of the same song. At least it keeps you awake.

Considering it's -28 out right now, I'd say it'd definitely the most depressing day of the year so far.

I agree, today is depressing. Perhaps this will lighten the day:

People need to take ownership of their depression and stop blaming the days of the week.

And yes, I decided this was junk science after "hump day" failed to deliver.

I think the winter months, cold weather and short days have more to do with peoples depression as opposed to this Monday theory. I get the blues every winter and find exercise to be the best remedy for me.

The third Monday in January is always Martin Luther King day in the States. Clearly, the guy who came up with this is racist.

Consider taking vitamin D. I used to be the same way. If you don't notice a difference in a week of trying, then it must be something else.

Absolutely without a question. I suffer from SAD (seasonal affective disorder) and from about early December to Late February every year, I am borderline suicidal some days. This is the worst bout I can ever remember the last few weeks. Girl drama over holidays amplified it this year, so I just spent an impromptu weekend in Vegas, with a hot slutty chick and I still couldn't shake the funk.

MOD EDIT: a little much
