Default Letter of Day in Today's Winnipeg Free Press

I am still fuming about the letter of the day from today's Free Press

Title: Don't move to Calgary

".........Stay in Manitoba if you can. Embrace the light traffic, friendly smiles, friends and family, public insurance, no health premiums, school system and affordable family activities. Stay home and remember Winnipeg is a great place to live. I'll be back."

PAULA MATIKAINEN
Calgary

If she hates our city so much why doesn't she leave......grrrrrr

Meh big cities aren't for everyone.

Besides, we could always complain about their insane tax rate. Not just the extra provicial sales tax, but their higher income tax.

You got a link?

Likely waiting to see if Ralph will hand her another cheque for being a resident.

Or, if waiting to see if she can find an equivalent job back in Winnipeg that pays 2/3 what jobs (non oil patch) pay here.

Sounds like a case of the big pot at the end of the rainbow didn't come to her as easily or quickly as she had thought.

Yeah, big cities arent for everyone. It's one of my goals to live in no city at all.

Maybe Paula doesnt want other people following her to Calgary, making Calgary even more crowded.

I've stopped telling all but my closest friends about the really great things I find out.

Take the Traffic Court for instance. For 15 years I have been plea-bargaining my traffic tickets. Then, last year sometime, I saw a Global news report highlighting how quick and easy it is to plea bargain. Global said everyone should do it. Now? They have taken away the plea bargaining. Boooooo....

Good thing she didn't put down Edmonton.

Then she'd have REAL hell to pay.

I work with a guy who loathes our city. He trashes it at every opportunity. And every time, I tell him to leave and that no one wants him here. His response, "Where do I go?" I feel like telling him, "Hell."

Baffles me why anyone would live anywhere they hate that much. I wasn't fond of Halifax so I moved to Calgary. Didn't seem that hard to me.

Embrace the light traffic, - Not sure what she is talking about there- Winnipeg's traffic was just as bad 10 years ago as Calgary's is just getting to now.
friendly smiles, -Yes, you get that in a smaller city
friends and family, - Almost all of my friends who were worth hanging out with in Winnipeg have since moved out of the city.
public insurance, - She must be under 25. My parents are mad that I pay less for insurance than them.
no health premiums, - Funny thing; when I moved here I had the exact same salary. Except my after tax income was about $50 per month higher. Just because the health premiums are burried in your taxes doesn't make them any cheaper.
school system- Can't speak to that as I don't have kids.
affordable family activities. - But how many times can you really go to the Forks? (If memory serves the zoo is no longer free in Winnipeg.)

It is quite obvious that she is new to Calgary, and like many people new to our city they miss home. She will move back to Winnipeg, discover that she misses Calgary more than she missed Winnipeg, and then move back. I did it, many others do it as well.

Hey, move to the 330,000 metropolis of London! I remember when we moved here from Calgary. My first thought was "I'll have to drive two hours (east to Toronto, west to Detroit) to do ANYTHING". Still bugs me, but London is a nice city, so I won't complain.

Lots to do in London during the summer, unless things have changed in the last 10 years. There used to be something going on most weekends, either in Victoria park or Harris park (or both). The patio at TJ Baxters was great.

But major acts and things rarely go to London, so you are correct on that point.

It kind of makes me laugh when the guy irate about an anti-Calgary letter has a nickname of "kootenayguy9". Was "calgaryguy9" already taken?

My g/f is from Saskatchewan. Some of her family still ditch the car at the edge of the city and make her drive around town when they get here.

I laugh when people call Calgary a big city. They need to go to truly big cities like London England, or NY before they make that comment.

Winnipeg might be a great place to live but bottom line, it's a crappy place to work. When the flow of goods went from east-west to north south in this country they went down with it - you can see the halt in buildings in the downtown area...

It's all relative...

I am a born and raised Calgarian and I have never had any desire to leave. I love this city and am proud to be a resident. I have visited many many many towns and cities throughout the country and never been tempted to move away from Calgary.

Honestly, I say to anyone who doesn't like Calgary: Leave. Or better yet, go to Edmonton and then at least you will like Calgary more.

I feel the same as you, I've lived here since I was 2 and love it to death.

The unfortunate thing is that I dont see myself being able to afford to live here much longer. I will always call Calgary home though.

I went to UWO in the early 90s and I've always thought London was a great city. I probably would have moved there if it wasn't for my allergies-they don't go well in "The Forest City".

A lot of Calgarians who have been to London have said it reminds them of Calgary in the early 80s, growth and lifestyle-wise.

Hold on... things can't continue like this for too long... plus, wages are going up too.

Way bigger than anything in Manitoba...

I know what your saying. I'd like to live in a bigger city too. But Calgary is pretty big compared to most of Canada.
