Etiquette help: I know you but forget your name
Hey CP,
So I'm back in my home town (Victoria) after 10 years away. I'm running into a lot of familiar faces that seem to know my name. The problem is I can't seem to remember these people's names or where I know them from.
How do I engage in conversation with them without insulting them because I have no idea who they are.
So far it's been an awkward "Hey what's up...." while moving along like I have somewhere important to be.
Any suggestions?

"I'm sorry but I was in a tragic car accident where my wife died and I suffered major memory loss so please don't be offended, but what is your name?"
"I'm sorry to here that, I'm Tammy. What was your wife's name?"
"Bitch, did you not just here what I just said? I don't remember!"
All problems solved.
Don't forget to open the door for her... The back door.

pro tips ITT so far
These aren't randoms from the past that I want to blow off. They are people that I recognize and want to reconnect with, but for whatever stupid reason I can't put it together where I know them from.

Honestly CaptainCrunch's idea was the best. If someone ever comes up to me at the university or wherever and I have no idea what their name is I get a friend to introduce themselves.

Did you have parties and binges with them or have you crammed your mind so full of stuff since then, that you honestly just can't remember?
Being honest with them is the best situation... or if you want to connect with them again to the point of getting their phone numbers, give them your phone and ask them to put their number in as a contact for you- or, just get their number, and then say "I forgot how to spell your name" and unless their name is Joe Smith you should be a-ok.

I think I've remembered about 5 names my entire life. I never forget a face, I always forget a name.
It's pretty easy to get by, you don't need to say their names 99.9% of the time. When in doubt, throw a buddy in there.

If they are a casual acquaintance (particularly if it has been a number of years), I always just go with the truth. I think honesty is probably good etiquette.
Frankly, I make it about me failing (My crummy memory, or a joke about not being smart enough to remember more than 5 things at once) and ask. Sometimes they squirm a bit, but usually the conversation doesn't miss a beat.
I do this with professional contacts all the time - people understand, we all have close friends, friends, acquaintances, colleagues, and scores of random people in our lives. A name or two are gonna slip through the cracks.

You could get them to write down their email address for you or open up a new contact on your phone and get them to enter their own information.

Tell them you tried to look them up on Facebook, but you couldn't get the spelling right.
And hope the guy's name isn't Mark Jones.
