Default URGENT: Need a fast online VIN search (free preferred, but will pay)

Buying a car tonight, but I need a reliable website for checking VINs. Looking for liens, rebuilds, theft, etc. Any good sites you guys know of?

Even if I have to pay $20, if it's good (reliable) info, I'll pay it.

If it's a canadian car, don't go anywhere but carproof.com https://www.carproof.com/Default.asp

Especially if you want a reliable report. Carfax often misses information that carproof has access to.

Damn, I just bought the 5-pack thing at Carfax, and it doesn't give me any lien info. I want to know if the car is being financed or not.

I should have waited longer for a response.

I came in here to make a snarky iPhone app joke, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised if there is one for searching VINs.

My guess? A rusted out '78 Pinto, but it has a Mac sticker in the back window.

After that post curiosity got the better of me. There's actually about half a dozen, and one even uses the camera as a vin barcode scanner.

So yes, there's an app for that. (no carproof though...)

Did the Carproof thing after wasting money on the Carfax one.

Neither showed any lien info. Carfax doesn't include it, and Carproof said that Alberta wasn't reporting that info right now.

^ You did the Carproof Verified ($50), not the Carproof Claims ($35), correct?

It's normal for a carproof report to not immediately show the info, as it needs to poll for it. Check back in a bit.

Yeah, I did the Verified one. Almost did the $70 one, until I figured out it was just the $50 one with a BC insurance check. They should make that a bit clearer.

FYI, site says this about delay in info.

Will reports be completed in the evening or on weekends?
The provinces, territories, and insurance data providers have varied hours on nights and weekends. When you submit your CarProof vehicle history search request the provinces that are available will process the request and the remainder will be queued until the provinces or territories are available. Typically, you should receive a completed report within minutes. If it is the night or weekend and a data source is not responding, you will typically have the report fully completed the following business morning.

I received my report but it says that a jurisdiction or data source is not reporting. What does this mean and what do I do now?
Your CarProof report is complete when it says "All Data Sources Reporting" in the Summary Section (Section 2) of the report. From time to time a data source that CarProof searches is not responding at the time your report was ordered. Although rare, this happens most commonly on weekends or nights. When this occurs CarProof provides you with your partially completed report for your convenience, rather than delay the delivery of your whole report. The report conspicuously warns readers that it is not complete. If a data source is not reporting, all sections of your report are complete except for the sections including the data source that is noted.

Once the data source that was not reporting becomes available, your report will automatically be completed. When this happens you will receive an email notification that your report has been completed. The next time you click on the unique electronic internet link for your report, the summary section will say "All Data Sources Reporting" and the incomplete sections of your report will be completed. CarProof advises that no decisions regarding the vehicle in your report be made until the report is complete.

Anyone have a carfax account I can get a report from a car that is imported from US. Willing to pay for it just don't want to spend the 1 time 40 dollars for a report.

Any help would be appreciated
