Default iPhone JailBreak Thread

I know there's an iPhone app thread, but it's easy for things to get lost in there. So...

I've been out of the JB game for a while. What's good now, in terms of themes, apps, functionality, etc? I don't care about the multi-tasking stuff. I've already tried backgrounder and pro-switcher. It just ended up getting in the way. I just don't have any need for task switching on my phone.

What else is there, though? I wouldn't mind a nice theme or something. I'm extremely picky about quality, so it has to be well done. Skip the icons, though. I hate only having half of my icons themed...

Anyway, so far all I have is Cydia, Mobile Terminal and Winterboard. A blank canvas, if you will.

Edit: I also have AndroidLock.

Why stop at just the unlock swipe?

Tempting, but I've been through this mess too many times in the past. It would be fun to play with for a few seconds, but my phone needs to be stable and reliable.

Wouldn't mind actually seeing a working version of the Android OS for once though.

Edit: Played around with a couple themes after posting this. Finally found something that looks ok, but now my status bar at the top keeps disappearing whenver I close an app. Yeesh.

Not to derail but I want to unlock my iPhone. I've heard that if you take it to your cell phone provider and ask them to unlock because you'll be in another country, they will do it for you. Is that true? I figured it may be easier to have them do it than try myself

Not likely with the iPhone. Sometimes they'll do that with other hardware though.

If you have 3.1.3 as iPhone firmware, I don't believe there is an unlock for that.

I only use 3 apps via jailbreak ... MyWi to make my iPhone emit the 3G signal as Wifi, My3G to trick my apps into thinking I'm on wifi (download over 20mb, high quality videos) and SBSettings so I can have one-touch access to things like brightness, wifi, 3g etc.

In many ways I don't like loading any more than that onto my phone because I also demand a stable device.

Hey, I am loving the Mywi--thanks! Needed it after loading up 3.1.3 and jailbreaking, and then the 'patch' I had to allow tethering with my 500mb plan wouldn't work anymore. So Mywi is exactly what I needed.

voipover3g is another must have for me to use skype for long distance.

Hey, anyone had any problems with 3.1.3 and spirit JB causing it to be slow to connect to 3g, particularly to check you email? It was fine before, but now takes forever (1-2minutes??) to actually check for new email.

Just came across this article on why you should jailbreak your iPad. The apps they suggest work on the iPhone as well.

Nice touch in including the app-that-shall-not-be-named, Gizmodo. Stay classy indeed.

Other than that, I got some nice ideas. I had no clue there was a vlc for iPhone. Nice.

Ya I thought adding that one particular app was something of a prick move. There are some good ideas in the article though.

I used "spirit" for a one-click jailbreak. So much more useful that the old quickpwn method.

Has anyone had success using "Spirit" to jailbreak 3.1.3? I'm going to try it but was wondering if anyone has tried it out!

Absolutely. It was done in the blink of an eye. Much easier than my past Pwnage Tool experiences. It's just one click and you're done. And it worked great...

Yeah the spirit jb is very nice. I was pretty shocked at how fast and easy it was.

What does "teethered" and "unteethered" jailbreak mean? That spirit can not be done on a currently jailbroken device and has to be done on an unaltered apple firmware?

Tethered just means "plugged in." In other words, some previous jailbreaks required you to plug your iPhone into your computer any time you wanted to reboot the device. This is called a "tethered jailbreak."

Spirit is an untethered jailbreak, meaning you don't have to plug into your computer to reboot it.

Worked like a charm. Thanks team!

One question...how long does it take Cydia to store the SHSH blob if it says "this device has a pending TSS request?"

Quick question: I jailbroke my iPhone with BlackRa1n a while back (I have firmware 3.1.2) and I'm now running into issues with apps not installing due to my old firmware. I realize spirit will bring me up to the current firmware, but what is the process for updating? Do I just backup my iPhone, restore it, run spirit and then reload everything or can I just run spirit without doing anything else?

A couple of issues I had with the spirit jb for 3.1.3.

-I have windows 7 and it wouldn't work, no idea why. Tried different things, but could not get it to work. Used my XP laptop and it worked no problem.

-I used aptbackup to restore my jb apps, but be aware if you have an unlock tool that gets restored. I had the unlock for 3.0 restored (what was it, blackrain, yellowsnow, something like that?) and it prevented my phone from getting a rogers signal for a day until I was able to figure out the problem.

-as mentioned above I couldn't use the patch I had to allow tethering with a 500mb plan, but I have now discovered mywi which works great to fix that problem.

Otherwise, my phone is much faster than it was under the old 3.0 jb I was using.

Hey, anyone know of an app that will allow video on a 3G, along with the ability to email or text the video? I have cycorder, but can't actually do anything with the video from it other than watch it on my phone.

Strange. Worked without any issue whatsoever here, Win 7 64-bit.
