New Gmail Interface - Do you like it?

There has been quite an outcry regarding the new gmail interface, so I'm wondering what Calgary Puck's techies think of it. I do most of my websurfing on a small netbook on the couch, and the new interface doesn't work well on the small screen. The ads also seem more intrusive, and I don't like the new color themes.

Any good options for an email client I can forward my gmail account to?

What do you think of the gmail interface?

The thing that grinds my gears the most is that they won't be leaving the old interface as a theme, or even as a "frozen" environment. Everyone has to switch whether you like it or not.

Was a little annoying to get used to the new buttons for archive etc, but other than that it isnt that bad. 99% of the time, I check my email on my phone or ipod anyway.

I rarely go to Gmail as 1) messages there are typically subscription type notifications and other kind of spammy messages I didn't want going to my personal email, and 2) I often view and/or delete them from my Blackberry.

Having said that, I just went to the Gmail site and didn't notice any changes.

I just went and changed my theme to something less busy because the one I'd been using over the past few years (Beach) was way too distracting in the new format. Otherwise I think it'll be okay. One downside is that my work makes me use IE and they haven't upgraded to a compatible format to the new gmail, so I'm stuck with the original basic html version at work. Not too concerned since I only have five more days left, hopefully they'll upgrade IE before I'm back in 2013.

Disliked it at first...

Then I changed it to 'compact' (Click the gear in the top right -> Compact)

Now I'm indifferent. However I do find the new colours a little weird... (Too much contrast? Not enough?)

I found it too cartoon-ish. I used it for about a week before I switched back. However, I didn't know the compact option was available. Thanks to the poster above for mentioning it. I'll have to try it out.

For a smaller monitor, there are 3 preferences you can choose that will resize the UI:

Comfortable, Cozy, and Compact. Click on the gear in the top right corner.

I've been using the "Shiny" theme for ages and feel no need to change, so I'm not impressed that I'll soon be forced to switch to the new look

I really dislike how the first, and most recent messages in email threads are now auto expanded to 2 lines vs. a single line of of grey'd out text in the old version. Also don't like how it auto shows people's avatars, and there doesn't seem to be a way to disable this.

i went back to the old look and was instantly depressed with how much better it was. the new interface is so awful.
edit: ok with the compact view its much better. i miss my shiny theme tho

Gmail is now just showing inbox and sentmail, with me having to scroll over a little tab to show other folders like "travel" etc. How do I change that?

Yeah. The stuff I really wanted to keep is in those folders. The new format seems kinda goofy.

It's a simple fix. Drag the bar until it's where you want it to be. Voila.
