Default Idiotic Idea or Brilliant Tourism Move?

My home town has banned all teen dances from municipal buildings.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-s...an-sydney.html

Either this idea is so stupid and merely trying to cover up an underlying problem

OR

They want to market Cape Breton Island as a gimicky touristy movie destination, they want to turn the place into a real life Footloose! Kind of like what PEI did with Anne of Green Gables.

Seriously, when your biggest concern is "the city council is trying to develop a tunnel to the airport to prevent future congestion and give the city a better opportunity to grow" and "the city built a bridge for pedestrians to cross the Bow River" or "the city is expanding our transit system to something that should take us from a decent system to something better" you guys don't realize just how good you've got it.

When I lived in PEI, drunken brawls were a typical weekend happening.

Watch the number of overdose deaths increase in Cape Breton. Teens are going to find something to do, and I imagine that it will now be in places where there won't be police to break up fights. Short sighted politician, 'not on my watch, so I'll just push the problem underground to obfusify any personal responsibility I might have'

A classic mistake . . . . . . from the Elvis Presley era in the 1950's, brought back for your amusement proudly by Cape Breton.

FYI there is more to Cape Breton than Sydney.

And wtf... Why is this news? People start drinking at age 9 out there. Has been like that for over a century. We're all descendants of tough, hard working, hard drinking coal miners. What do people expect?

They're not banning dancing, they just don't want it in buildings paid for by tax payers.
If a kid gets killed and the parents sue... more burden in tax payers.

No worries, all it takes is one inner city kid willing to punch-dance out his rage.

Actually no, the burden is on the promoter. It's not the city putting the dances on, they're just not allowing them.

My school had banned all dancing. I never went to a single dance as a kid.

To this day you will never catch me on a dance floor.

Never learned, never tried, just not comfortable at all to even try.

My town was 40% Menonnite and so was my principal. They wanted to avoid us from the sin of dancing so we took up the world of bush parties.

After watching those idiots dance at the end of the original movies they didn't show that the town immediately cancelled all future school dances unless they pitched in to hire Sparky Polaski.

So there will still be Red Cup dances and Academy dances? Just no more dances at Centennial. Growing up we never had dances there anyways; just school dances.

From what I understand the Academy no longer has dances (not cost effective with the amount of security required) and I'm not sure about the Red Cup dance, I'll look into it though.

The biggest beef I have is not that dances are being cancelled, it's that a government isn't allowing recreation halls to be used for recreation if the use is for teenagers.

Dumb? Is that a personal attack?

Anyways, my post was in jest as I have been around cap Breton on the highway that circles the island when I was 12 or so and I recall it was nice, although I'd likely appreciate it now.

Yes, it was a personal attack.
Anyone who doesn't want to go to Cape Breton is dumb.
As I said before, that place is awesome!
