Canada Day 'Long' Weekend
So, I just had a bunch of my staff complain that they don't get a long weekend and they don't get paid for a day off this year. In case you weren't aware (as I wasn't) Canada Day is on a Saturday this year. And how sweet it is! As a small business owner I loathe Stat Holidays. I have to pay a bunch of people not to work and I hate it.
What are people's employers doing for them this year? I know some companies with nicer bosses then me (and probably more money to throw around) give staff a paid day off anyway.
What is your deal?

I get paid day off.
Don't your workers get the Monday off then? I thought the Monday would qualify as the stat holiday since Canada Day falls on the weekend.

If Canada Day is on Sunday it moves to Monday. But Saturday stays as Saturday.
Not so much a tight ship, more that I dont like paying people to sit at home. My business is based on hours worked that I bill back to my clients. Paying staff and not billing isn't really a great business plan.

I believe that you are supposed to give them Friday or Monday off since it lands on a Saturday. You'll have to check into that, but I'm pretty sure that is how it works. That is the way it has happened for me at my previous places of employment when Canada Day landed on a Saturday.
I'll have to check with my bosses, but I'm pretty certain we'll be closed on Friday before or Monday after Canada Day.

Yeah, dude, I'm pretty sure you're required to give them a day off.
As far as I know everyone is entitled to 10 or 11 Stat holidays, so if they land on a weekend, you're required to give them a day off in lieu of (unless they are contract workers).'
Anyway, I get Friday off instead. Whoopee.
Edit: I guess KG cleard that one up.
I'll be damned.

Not true, If Saturday is a normal working day and you are closed on that day then Saturday is your day off. If a business is normally closed on Saturdays then a day must be given

That's what I understand as well. The thing I don't like about it is that what if Saturday happens to be the busiest day of the week. I would much rather be closed on the Monday.

I don't think so. Not in Alberta anyway...from that link above...
Eligible employee – not normally scheduled to work on day of the holiday – does not work
Employee is not entitled to receive pay for the holiday nor another day off with pay.

I don't get how it's decided whether it's the Monday you get off, or the Friday. I had assumed that it would be the Friday, since that's the weekday closest to the day of the holiday, but when I was filling out my timesheet at work today, everyone told me it was Monday, and it sounded like Monday was the day off for EVERYONE. But now that I read this thread, I hear of a lot of you having Fridays off. Is it just the boss that decides which day, or what?
