Democracy doesn’t depend just on voting — counting matters, too. And city hall is looking at shifting the way Toronto does both.

City council is to consider a “ranked ballot” initiative at its two-day meeting starting Tuesday. If this measure ultimately comes to fruition, it could radically alter the way Canada’s sixth largest government is elected.

This is precisely the type of electoral reform that Canada needs more of, and the article linked within this article suggests it has majority support.

W00t! About freakin time.

We had an asshat council person here in Ottawa that embezzled city funds. Somehow he had the gall to run again. However there were SIX good candidates that ran against him and he ended up winning with only 17% of the vote. Of the seven people I would have ranked him dead last. And I'm sure that would have been the case for most people. Vote splitting hurts democracy as it warps the publics intent.
