CALGARY -- Get ready to travel the Queen Elizabeth II Highway to Calgary.
In a development kept so buttoned down that few outside the premier's and Alberta protocol offices know of it, plans have been finalized to rename the 300-kilometre north-south link from Edmonton to Calgary in honour of the visiting monarch.

I have always wanted to ride Queen Elizabeth, and not just the San Francisco version.

Stupid plan.... i used to not care but increasingly everything about the Royal Family makes me sick.
The very idea of this elite family living the good life due to some god ordained right as superior to the rest of us is disgusting. They are millionaire trash supported by the tax payer for no good reason other then tabloid gossip...

What has the Queen ever done for Canada to deserve anything like that?
Bah, I don't really care, but I don't see the point either except for brown nosing purposes.
I wonder how much it will cost to change all the signs and references to that highway?

Of course, they generate millions and millions for the tabloid companies! Imagine all the jobs lost if the Royal Family was gone...

Less then the actual trip we are financing for her will cost no doubt....

She already has a hospital named after her in Grande Prairie.
What an utter waste of time.

And we have a road in Edmonton named after her already as well. This whole monarchy is just costing too much money. I don't see the justification for it anymore.

I'm British (living in Alberta) and you don't even want to get me started about the "Royal" family.
What a waste of time and money however......

What kind of support is there in Britain? Do you know, or has it been a while?

Well, I can't see the new name actually catching on with the people.
Especially since it's supposed to be "Queen Elizabeth II Highway", people will still call it Highway 2. (II).
At the very worst, I can see people maybe eventually calling it the QE II, but I doubt it.
....And when are we getting out bullet train? Then we won't even have to drive the highway! :P

I think its kinda cool, and tying in nicely with her title, and the Centennial.
She was nice enough to come to Alberta and Sask (only) for this trip, and say what you will about the current state of affairs in the Royal Family, she's always been the one constant that's acted with the digninty that the figurehead position should be handled with, and most of the time, one of the only voices of reason and common sense in that whole lot.

I think a lot of people just grow old of the whole elitist ideal that royalty is based on.
The Queen Mother was the only one I really respected.

She was NICE enough to come to Alberta and Sask? It's like she's going out of her way and doing us some huge favour by gracing us with her presence. For all I care, next time she can stay in England.

don't forget that she is doing alberta a favor. I am sure she has much better things to do, and other places that she could stay. As far as naming a highway after her, I can think of much worse name.
