Default WEEK 18: STAMPEDERS at Alouettes

WEEK 18: STAMPEDERS at Alouettes

As I am writing this, the Eskimos and the BC Lions game will start soon. If Edmonton wins, the Stamps will not have a chance of taking 1st place in the West even if they win their last 2 games due to the tiebreaker. But they still have a good chance of hosting the playoff game against the BC Lions as long as the Stamps wins both game. If BC Lions beats the Eskimos, all three teams might end up being tied if BC and Edmonton wins their last game and Calgary wins their last 2 games. So that means, they will end up in 3rd place. I hate to say this but this might be the first time I have to cheer for the Eskimos to win. They can have the bye week and hopefully get too high on themselves and hope the Stamps win their last two games. Stamps will end up 11-7 and BC 10-8 even if they win their last game. Not an easy task for the Stamps because they are playing one of the best team in the CFL this week, the Alouettes.

OFFENSE:

QB Drew Tate had a passing grade last week against the Riders. Great start for him with 251 yards 1 TD and 2 INT. Drew had a great 1st half but in the 2nd half he didn't have a lot of chances because of the Riders time of possessions and his 2 INTs. Tate threw to 10 different receivers including 5 completions to Landan Talley, who is playing for the injured Ken-Yon Rambo, with 51 receiving yards and 1 TD. Nik Lewis caught 4 pass and now have 86 receptions in the season 2nd best in the CFL. He is now 3rd in receiving yards this season with 1,109 yards. Forzani and Arthur each had two receptions in the win against the Riders while Jon Cornish carried the ball 13 times for 92 yards and 1 TD.

On the injury front, Receiver Ken-Yon Rambo, RB LaMarcus Coker, OL J.Michael Deane and Steve Myddleton are injured and will not play against the Als.

DEFENSE:

Rushing defensehave been atrocious the last few games before last week. Stamps D limited the Riders to 83 rushing yards and only gave up 13 points. They sacked the Riders QB twice and forced 3 turnovers. Demetrious Morley had 2 tackles and a QB sack that forced Darian Durant out of the game and out of the season with the huge hit. Charleston Hughes had 2 tackles and a 67 yards interceptions that he came close in scoring a touchdown or he might say 'almost took it to the house'. DE Chris McCoy is fitting in nicely with 6 tackles.

Devone Claybrooks has been a healthy scratch for the last few games and looks like he will sit out again against the Als with the play of McCoy, Davis and Hughes. CB Quincy Butler will play his first CFL game and will have a tough task in defending against the best in the league Richardson. Butler will replace the injured Greg Fassit in the lineup. LB Malik Jackson is done for the season with an injury.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

The Special Team had a pretty quiet night last week against the Riders. I am sure returner Larry Taylor would like to show the Als' fans Tressman made a mistake in letting him go after last season. Kicker Rene Paredes will be playing his 1st game in front of his families and friends. Paredes played for Concordia last year.

************************************************** **
QB Drew Tate answered everybody's question last week with his performance against the Riders. Hufnagel made the right decision in playing Drew Tate ahead of veteran QB Henry Burris. I hope to see a repeat of his goo performance against a better Als defense. A win against the Als will definitely give Hufnagel an easy decision in starting him in the playoff game.

GO STAMPS GO!!!!

Game time: Sunday, 11:00am MST at Molson Percival Stadium

BC Lions beat the Edmonton Eskimos. So it means Calgary have to win both their games and BC and Edmonton lose their last game in order for the Stamps to get the 1st place. Or BC or Edmonton lose their last game in order to get 2nd place. If Calgary lose to Montreal or in Winnipeg next week, then we are in 3rd place. GO STAMPS GO!! We can't afford to lose any of our last two games.

Burris fumbles as a backup.

So overrated.

Now Reynolds fumbles, the old guard is just killing the Stamps.

At least a 13 points swing in those two turnovers. On the bright side, the rest of the offense looks pretty good, and the defense has done well after the first Als possession.

Half-time panel going on at-length about how disrespectful it is to use Burris on third-down. Gotta say, I think you find a way to keep him involved in the team, even if it means putting him in as the short yardage guy. If he could embrace the role (ie. not fumble), it really puts a lot of pressure on the defense because they need to respect his ability to pass or to break a big run (especially if he's used in second-and-short situations).

Good 1st quarter for the Stampeders. I love that they were mixing up the plays, running, throwing and deep passes. They even did a lateral on Larry Taylor with success. It's unfortunate that we have two turnovers and Montreal scored 7 points on those turnovers. It's also unfortunate that the 2 turnovers were committed by two veterans starters at the beginning of the season. I actually questioned that decision on having Burris in doing the 3rd down gamble. The TSN panel actually thinks the same way except Milt Stegall.
Running game is working for us so far with 89 rushing yards so far. Come on Double D, don't abandon the run in the 2nd half please. On the other side, our run defense needs to stop Brandon Whitaker. Don't give Calvillo more arsenal there.

I actually like the combination of Dunigan and Gord Miller. Matt Dunigan called it right 3 times with 2 Montreal successful challenges and Reynolds' fumble. A big difference listening to Cuthbert and Glen Suitor who normally are against the Stampeders.

Nice stripped by Charleston Hughes on Calvillo and good recovery by Eric Fraser.

Another good hold by the D. They've been doing an impressive job at limiting the run all afternoon.

Nice drive!

I have a hard time remembering another CFL game that has gone this long without a field goal attempt by either team.

Don't get how they can call that offside on Calgary when he was just reacting to the Montreal receiver crossing the line. But no harm done, another nice hold by the D.
