Default Camera Lens Help!

I know nothing about photography and am in the process of buying a camera lens for an xmas gift...

The camera is a Canon rebel t1i

She has expressed interest in a wide angle lens so I am asking for recommendations on a decent lens to buy that won't break the bank.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

Unfortunatly decent camara lens are all expensive.

First you need to know what lens's she already has.

My guess is she already has an 18-55mm lens as that is the standard lens they sell with the camera

Can you be a little more specific about your budget?

My first suggestion is the Tamron AF 17-50mm f2.8 Di II.

If she wants something even wider there's the Tokina ATX 11-16mm f2.8.

There's also the Canon EF 20mm f2.8 USM if she wants a prime lens instead of a zoom.

I would hazard a guess she already has the Cannon 18-55mm, almost everyone buys them together as a kit, which would make the Tameron a bit pointless.

the Tokina might be a better bet

I'd say the Tamron is a far better lens. Having f2.8 available across the zoom range is very important. That's 2 stops faster at 55mm. And the extra mm at the wide end isn't insignificant.

I do agree that the Tokina would be a better lens, but it wasn't in his price range. If he wants to bump up his budget I say go for it.

Agreed, the extra mm is worth it. I love having a 10-20mm!

I bet she would much rather a $600.00 gift card to the Camera store.

Let her choose, plus she can add her own money to get what she really wants.
Photographers can and should be very picky about their gear.

she does indeed have the 18-55mm lens right now.

If the better product is only a couple hundred more then I don't have a problem with that.

I WAS thinking of a gift card...but i've always like to put in some work into researching her present and just giving her the actual product

I don't know Cannons that well, Nikon guy myself, the fact she's letting him buy the thing tends to suggest she's not that exacting therefore a better lens in the same range may not really be that much more useful to her than something different.

That said I'd pick up a 50mm prime before I'd bother with a wide angle

Choosing a wide angle is tough enough if you're buying it for yourself (between the Tokina 11-16, Sigma 8-16, Nikon 10-24 / Canon 10-22). Gift cards suck too because pricing and availability varies. Either find out exactly what lens she wants or just help her buy it. Maybe you can choose something small and personal to go with it instead?

This is very good advice, even if she doesn't realise it herself yet. Part of working out what lens you want is going to the store and trying them.

How wide of lens are we talking here? $600 for a lens for an amateur photog is a lot of money.

You can pick up a 28mm 2.8 for under $300, I bet.

I'd recommend the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8. I've got the Nikon mount, but it's the same lens. Optics are fantastic. Autofocus kinda stinks, but it's a great lens at its price point. Picked it up for $650ish at The Camera Store.

I haven't had good experiences with either Tamron or Sigma, so I'd steer away from those personally. The build on that Tokina is nice.

That being said, if she doesn't have any prime lenses (non-zooms), consider picking her up a 50 or 85mm. The 11-16 is basically a prime anyways, and I rarely pull it out of my bag unless I'm shooting interiors/architecture. I get WAY more bang for my buck out of my primes.

If you go the gift card route, get her one from The Camera Store (assuming you're in Calgary). Great store and great people.

EDIT: Wow, just looked at the camera store's website - $747 for the Tokina. Ouch. Guess the lens has really gone up in popularity the past couple years as I definitely paid under $650 for it.

Prices on lenses are ~$100-150 right now due to the earthquakes in Japan, limiting the production.

Sigma makes a great wide angle lens. 10-20mm
