It’s the stuff of science fiction. You sit on your couch and rather than fumble with several remotes or use hand gestures, you simply talk: “Put on the last episode of Gossip Girl.” “Play the local news headlines.” “Play some Coldplay music videos.” Siri does the rest.

Of course this experience goes beyond just playing TV shows or the local news. As the line between television programming and Web content continues to erode, a Siri-powered television would become more necessary. You aren’t going to want to flip through file folders or baskets of content, checking off what you want. Telling Siri to “play videos of cute cats falling asleep” would return an endless YouTube stream of adorable napping fur balls.

Wow. I knew an Apple TV set was comming. However, I assumed it was just built in with AppleTV to hook into iTunes.

I would totally buy this. However, what would the cable companies think? Would it integrate with the Gateway? If so, doesn't it just mean Shaw has sunk a dump load of money into a 3rd rate system in comparison?

I can't see that happening. Still, this hooked up to your computer would still rock.

Apple has transformed most other consumer markets, no reason to think they couldn't do the same for TV.

I probably wouldn't want to talk to my TV to change channels or anything but being able to say "Record all new episodes of The Walking Dead on channel 240" or "Record 60 Minutes on Saturday" and have it do it would be pretty sweet.

I think the timeline would also allow them to improve iTunes. I wouldn't be surprised if they were able to negotiate with networks to allow for subscription services.

In my opinion this is the only way it would work. That way they could control both the tv and the content stream. If they control the content perhaps they could use that to subsidize the cost of the tv, which I expect would be quite expensive. That's not to say they would price it incredibly low (it is Apple after all), but they could be competitive.

If they do this I would love to see one of those surround-sound speaker bars built in. That would definitely set it apart. Apple is generally about creating the total experience in one device. Mac products are costly, but they include all the necessary parts for 95% of people to do fun things. I'd like to see a tv that has that goal as well.

I am definitely interested in this so long as the first model isn't white. My dad desperately needs this. Even a properly configured Harmony frustrates and stymies him.

You can get one of these today, but it is expensive. I wonder if Apple would use this idea, and make it cheaper and better?

I think the Siri TV is the Apple rumor getting itself worked up as usual.

I think the only thing holding back an Apple TV is agreements with the networks. Microsoft apparently has something happening with TV and the Xbox, but the details are pretty scant at this point. So it could happen.

One of the things that I would look forward to with an Apple TV is an awesome looking TV with a fantastic display and built-in connectivity. Of course like most Apple things it would have premium price tag on it.

Actually something else that makes me think this rumor doesn't have much to it is the current Apple TV box. So much potential in that thing and they have only added Airplay and Gamecenter.

I think apps for Apple TV would put it over the top. Being able to download and play small app-like games would be fun for a wide audience of people (not just gamers). Playing Scrabble or Trivia games would be fun. Plants Vs Zombies would be cool. While these are available at cheaper on XBox and PS3 stores, you're not going to get your average consumer buying them there.

Throw in an iSight camera and microphone for Skype/Facetime calls and it would be useful in homes and in offices.

Totally unrelated, sort of related, I'd love for some kind of IMDB integration for TV and movies. Hitting the info button during a show and getting the full list of actors from the episode and then seeing what they were in would solve a lot of "where have I seen that guy before" without having to grab my phone and search that way.

So I downloaded a new update for Apple TV, that has the TV talking to me. It seems to have reset the box to factory default and had removed the home sharing info. Since I lost my remote, and just use my ipod to control it, I don't think there is any way to enter this info without buying a new one, is that correct?

The Apple TV box is really a stopgap solution from Apple until they can control the entire experience.

Think about it, Apple TV is input 2/3, maybe even 4. Is that an ideal experience? Probably not. But to wrestle control of the rest, Apple would have to build the entire TV.

Should the user have to deal with selecting inputs? Do we even need channels anymore? How do we get more functionality into a sit-back-and-enjoy experience? Should it be connected to the Internet? How could your TV integrate with all your other devices? What about a camera? Motion controls?
The TV industry is ripe for disruption. So many designs that haven't changed in forever because "that's how it's always been done."
