Default Any Oracle Client experts in the house?

I'm currently trying to get an application working in Windows 7. When I installed it manually, no problems, everything worked.

On probably 20 machines it's working just fine. On 2 of them it doesn't work at all, and it's a database related problem. When it attempts to connect it locks up the app and then finally fails connecting.

A tnsping on the working machines gives me 0-10ms ping times.

On the ones that don't work it's usually 160-240ms.

One of the 'broken' ones is running the same exact Oracle client.

The other is running 11.2.0.1.0 (vs 11.2.0.2.0 on the others).

Unfortunately on that machine I don't have access to upgrade the client, but on the other I did, ripped out all of the clients, tried it with 10, tried it with 11, no luck. I've googled this a ton but really don't know where to start.

Any ideas CP?

Network card drivers? Once I had an issue where printer drivers weren't working on a select subset of supposedly identical machines, and upgrading the network card drivers ended up fixing it. Or try moving the offending computers to where the working ones are, maybe bad network drops?

Proper ports open on firewall?

Check the logs.

Just think of all the man hours spent across all Oracle sites across the world trying to get the Oracle client to work well. The mind boggles.

Haha, thanks for the suggestion guys. STILL fighting this. The machine everything was working fine on suddenly stopped working. Can still tnsping, log in via SQLplus, but the app can't authenticate now. Wtf. I think I've had all combinations of this work/not work at different times. My mind is thoroughly bottled.

Potentially an issue with the app? Sounds like the client is working if you can connect using SQLplus and tnsping. The difference in response times when working vs. not is wierd.

Try disabling IPv6, see if it changes the nature of the problem?
