Post Ogden Grain Elevator Implosion Oct. 16

Tomorrow morning at approximately 7:57am they will be imploding the big Ogden Grain Elevator on 15th street SE.

There will be multiple road closures (including north and southbound Deerfoot for 5-10 minutes) as this happens.

Could make for some pretty cool pictures if the sky lightens up in time. Here is the Herald article on it:

S.E. roads will be closed for blast

Spoiler!

Cargill, which owns the historic Ogden Federal Elevator in Bonnybrook, said it could no longer afford to keep it going.

It's a Calgary landmark, a nearly century-old building praised overseas as a model of innovative industrial architecture.

But the clock is ticking - and by Sunday morning, hundreds of small explosions will reduce the historic Ogden Federal Elevator in Bonnybrook to dust and rubble.

It marks the end of an era for the grain terminal, one of the earliest concrete structures of its kind built in the Prairies.

For safety reasons, several roads and intersections around the site will briefly close at 7: 57 a.m., during the blasting period, including sections of northbound and southbound Deerfoot Trail, at Glenmore Trail and Peigan Trail respectively.

Police plan to shut down all lanes at 42nd Avenue and 15th Avenue S.E., as well as eastbound and westbound lanes of 46th Avenue at 13th Street S.E. The closings - expected to last between seven and 10 minutes - will also include westbound 50th Avenue S.E. and eastbound 50th Avenue at Ogden Road S.E.

Thats cool. A week or two ago my wife and I were wondering if it would be easier to implode it, as opposed to taking it down piece by piece.

End of an era. I watched one elevator in my hometown get demo'd (not with explosives though) and another get moved out on a flatbed trailer to the next town. There are so few grain elevators left in the prairies.

Travel north of Edmonton. There are plenty.

The old grain elevators were great visual nav-aids when flying around the prairies. They stood out so much better than the newer aluminum silos.

Those a good shots, particularily the ones of the roof. Looks like all the concrete was formed using 2x4s. I wonder how long Jonus Lynch has been dead for.

It had one of those elevators you had to manually run...ie you could intentionally stop in between floors if you wanted...Really small as well. Could barely fit 3 people.

The view from the red light area in that one pic is awesome as well...

I wonder if the the one in medicine hat (link) is next on the list to be demolished. It's pretty old/ugly.

We had a late night entertaining some guests, I'm assuming the 4 or 5 loud bangs right around 8am were the charges going off?

FYI, a far away pixely view of it is up. Pretty tiny view, but will suffice until they can get us a taste from the cameras on site.

I live in Inglewood and didn't hear a thing! Must have been because I'm so used to the train going by and aircraft overhead.

The whole event was stunning! I was taken back by the force of the explosion.

Big thanks to the OP for starting the thread-I may not have known this was to happen if it weren't for it.
